Sound Check! Tennishu, Ms. Jaylin Brown, Nancy Raygun, Real Boston Richey

by | Feb 13, 2025 | AMERICANA & BLUES, DOWNTOWN RVA, ELECTRONIC & EXPERIMENTAL, HIP HOP & RAP, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, RHYTHM & SOUL, ROCK & INDIE

Lately, I’ve been in a serious rap mood, and with that, I’m continuing my quest to dive deeper into the local scene. If you’ve got any tips, send them my way. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Basic City Beer Co.
Thursday, February 13th, 2025
Tennishu, Eras, Crenshaw, Fulmetalparka$

This is a super cool—and free—event just over the bridge at Basic City. As you step inside, you’ll find yourself transported to another era, with decor that immerses you in a bustling disco—lights shining, beats pulsing, and energy in the air. To break the ice, singles can join a round of speed dating, while those already coupled up can warm up the dance floor.

The night kicks off with a performance by Fulmetalparka$, a Virginia native who has gained national recognition for his laid-back beats and commanding voice. As the set wraps up, the party keeps moving with DJ Crenshaw, who will be spinning and taking the mic with a selection of high-energy, dance-ready tracks.

Following these electrifying performances, the mood shifts to something more intimate with Eras. Taking a guitar-driven approach, Eras introduces a smooth R&B vibe—close, comforting, and soulful. Closing out the night is Tennishu, a local rapper, multi-instrumentalist and frontman for Butcher Brown, known for his fluid delivery and experimental beats. His sound is immersive, pulling you into a world where the night feels endless.

Ms. Jaylin Brown

Local neo-soul singer and guitarist Ms. Jaylin Brown will be serenading Bob & Sally Mooney Hall inside Dominion Energy Center post-Valentine’s Day with an assortment of love songs in all their forms—celebratory, wistful, and everything in between. Known for her rich, expressive vocals, Brown has the kind of voice that feels like it belongs in a dimly lit speakeasy, tucked behind a detective’s secret bookcase, where every lyric drips with longing and warmth.

Her setlist is expected to blend classic love ballads with contemporary favorites and original compositions, creating a soundtrack for romance, reflection, and the quiet ache of nostalgia. Whether you spent the 14th alone, wrapped in self-love, or with someone special, this night offers a chance to extend the festivities in an intimate, candlelit setting.

Bring a date, bring a friend, or simply bring yourself—either way, it’s the perfect opportunity to settle in, sip something smooth, and let Ms. Jaylen Brown’s soulful voice carry you away.

Nancy Raygun, Wrong Worshippers, Oh Devil!, Bullseye

A double release from local rockers—love to see it. Nancy Raygun just dropped “Surroundings”, their latest single, leaning even further into that California indie rock sound. This one feels like a true seaside track. For a Virginia-born-and-raised group, they’ve never sounded more West Coast.

Wrong Worshippers are making their return with “Experimental Jazz,” their first single since their 2023 hit “Not Your Pawns.” As always, it’s an exciting, instrumentally rich track that’s sure to be a blast to move to. If you’ve never experienced the wave that is a WW crowd, do yourself a favor this time.

Oh Devil! has been making their rounds lately, bringing an indie-punk sound packed with sharp, relatable lyrics. And this show marks the debut of Bullseye—sharing a member with Nancy Raygun—which means expectations are high.

Real Boston Richey, Trap Ties Ky, Fatty, Naeedy Da Don

Real Boston Richey is a Florida-based rapper who has seen a meteoric rise since his first releases earlier this decade. Signed to Future’s label, Freebandz, he has dropped a tidal wave of singles and full-length projects. His sound leans toward drill, characterized by hoarse yet sharp vocals that cut through heavy beats.

He’ll be joined by a lineup of rappers set to deliver a hard-hitting show.

NEW TUNES

9000 Cigarettes by Cannabyss

This is one of three tracks from the local group’s debut release, Magnum Dopus. The sound can only be described as maniacal—perhaps villainous, maybe even evil. A defining example of noise rock, it’s a fleshy yet metallic wall of crashing cymbals, distorted amps, and barely legible vocals.Overall, it’s an intensely interesting project that delivers pure sonic chaos. (For all the nerds out there like myself, this is what I imagine the Warp sounds like in Warhammer 40K.)

Opinion | Richmond, We Don’t Need Another Love Song

Music has always been a mirror. It tells us who we are, what we value, and, sometimes, what we’re too afraid to face. But if music is supposed to reflect the world around us, then what does it say that so much of today’s mainstream music says… nothing at all? Richmond...
