The Smirks, White Beast, Dials, Tess Fisher
This is a really diverse lineup to raise money for the Richmond Weelaunee Defense Society, a local, community-driven group dedicated to fighting injustice. Headlining the fundraiser will be The Smirks—some real kickers. Their 2018 self titled album is fantastic. The first track, “Riot,” immediately hooks you with gritty, no-fucks-given vocals, ripping guitar, and drums beaten into a frenzy. I cannot wait to dive into the pit, shoving and pushing to the unfettered drive of these punk rockers.
White Beast is the type of band you cannot look away from. They are a duo, but their sound is so incredibly thick and rich. They are a force of unbridled power. If I had to give them one word, it’s just power. Streets are whispering of a new release coming up, and brother, it is good.
Dials is the new project of Wrong Worshippers drummer Milo. The lone protagonist sits atop a mighty throne, crackling with energy unleashed in complicated polyrhythms and dynamic beats. To the best of my knowledge, the likes of this sound have never been seen before in our own Richmond.
In my eyes, we are entering a bit of a folk revival right now, and Tess Fisher is a fantastic voice to proclaim it. Her vocals overflow with strength and vision, paired with a simple and interesting instrumental backing. There are some folks who can connect simultaneously to the past and the future, and Tess Fisher is one of them.

Calamari’s Long Slow Death, Kitty Corner, Codex One
Kitty Corner is hot off a packed show at The Camel last week and is back at it to deliver another stellar performance. This group pulls from a variety of Midwest emo and alt-country influences, creating a young and relatable sound. A Kitty Corner set feels like a whole journey—they really have dynamics on lock, and it makes their performance feel like a movie.
Calamari’s Long Slow Death is a local electronica/noise band that I have yet to catch live. Though I haven’t seen them in person, I can guarantee you they’re catchy! “Lobotomy” is my standout track of theirs—it switches up on a dime, slowing and speeding, keeping the listener in a confused, happy frenzy.
It seems like Codex One is a relatively new group, but they’ve got all the potential in the world!

Kendall Street Company, Prabir Trio
Kendall Street Company is hitting the ground running after the recent release of Singles Going Heady: 2024, a collection of their monthly singles from 2024. They’re truly a big pot of every musical influence, but the most prominent flavor is rowdy, toe-tapping country rock. They’ve been steadily cementing themselves into the Virginia musical pantheon.
The Prabir Trio is a demi-god in this same RVA Olympus. The group pumps out the most beautiful power pop, heavily influenced by Indian music. They write some of the catchiest melodies this side of the hemisphere and have a compelling presence on stage. They were one of the first groups I discovered when I started my Richmond odyssey, and I remember being absolutely enchanted.

”Flow’ by Redwood Joy
“Flow” is my standout track off of Redwood Joy’s new album … and what a noise it was. It is an acoustic bluesy jam with a really interesting variety of effects, providing a cutting and mysterious tone. The guitar work has a very defined voice which I find few and far between in instrumental songs and I think that is quite the accomplishment. The album pulls you from one moment of complicated excited guitar, to the next, hushed spoken word.

Many may recognize this band by their former name, SHID, who delivered an absurd performance at The Camel alongside Misc. a few months ago. Nysa are one of the craziest bands I have ever seen live, with the singer found on stage, in the crowd, on the crowd, at the bar, and even outside (still singing into the mic) at different points throughout their show.
“Parasite” is their new track, embodying that sheer chaos into a speed-driven, heavy three minutes. I can only describe this as a pure blast. Whispers in the air say they’re coming back to give Richmond another shock soon…
