Wes Parker, Opin, Sun V Set

Splinter is Wes Parker’s newest EP, a six-song volume of sweet sincerity. The titular track is an electric kicker, while Deadbolt has the feel of a classic country heartbreaker. This EP is a beautiful and revealing summary of the alt-country wave, blending the modern sensibilities of indie rock. Read our interview with him HERE.

As you explore the record and dive into the details, you’ll find a number of treasures and moments of excitement. These songs are dynamic and engaging, and I think they’ll translate especially well in a live setting.

Interestingly, I think Opin could fit just as well supporting Rubblebucket as Parker. Opin creates a beautiful brand of soundtrack-pop—a mesmerizing gaze into another rhythmic world.

Sun V Set is carried by an acoustic guitar and guided by a strong, clear voice. The lyrics are creative and work seamlessly with the vocals to create an almost otherworldly feel.

Rubblebucket, Hannah Mohan

Taking the big stage this week is NYC art-pop group Rubblebucket. Their horn section paints the perfect canvas to dance upon. They have a remarkably diverse blend—some songs carry an upbeat, vocal-heavy energy (think Matt and Kim), while others settle into straight modern disco grooves. These tracks are pure fun. First, you can’t help but tap your foot. Then, before you know it, your head is bobbing back and forth. And suddenly, you’re spinning around the room in a hectic, inspired dance.

Supporting this one is Hannah Mohan. Hailing from Massachusetts, her music has a surprisingly West Coast feel, with those coming-of-age chords that make you feel like you’re in a movie that doesn’t exist. Her vocals are incredibly dynamic and alive, creating an intimate and personal effect. I love the raw, low-maintenance charm of this kind of indie rock.

Sweet Bahs, Anastasia, Void the Sandman, Velvet Ruin

This is a particularly interesting bill entitled Diva Dialysis, a benefit show for a local dialysis patient.

Kicking off the lineup of divas is Sweet Bahs, a Virginia duo that I’d describe sonically as Jack Johnson with more spunk and a pushback against a hard world. Their songwriting is clearly well-honed, resulting in a sound that is both professional and polished, yet still young and full of energy.

Anastasia is a powerhouse of sound. This doom/goth trio incorporates shoegaze elements, leading listeners into deep, atmospheric sonic landscapes. Their live release of Angel Eyes” proves they can bring that intensity to the stage.

VOiD The Sandman is celebrating their newest single, Devi On Your Shoulder—a cinematic journey into a creepy, unknown world. The track pulls you through a dark tunnel before the chorus erupts like a bolt of lightning, with sharp, screaming vocals crashing over you. It’s an intense ride, spiraling into an outro that will shake your house.

I finally caught Velvet Ruin at The Camel the other day and was blown away by their performance. They debuted a fantastic goth-disco track they had written earlier that week, and it ended up being one of the absolute highlights of the night.
