Wow, it’s been a big month for national acts announcing Richmond shows – Weird Al is set to come this summer, now we’ve got hipster-hippy-pseudo-spiritual-NPR-wunderkind Sufjan Stevens coming to the Altria Theater on May 6th!

It’s been a good five years since we’ve gotten a new full album from the haunting melody master that is Stevens.

2010’s The Age of Adz received pretty stellar reviews when it first came out. The A.V. club called it “an expression of a restless artist trying to stretch his own limits… simultaneously admirable and exhausting.” (in a good way, I guess)

But for myself, it was 05’s Illinois which really set Stevens ahead of the pack. Mixing folk, acoustic, noise, vocal harmonies, and every other musical concept his creative mind could find under the kitchen sink, Stevens is a weird/amazing mess and we should be pumped to catch him when he comes to town.

I have many fond memories dangerously riding my bike through VCU’s campus listening to ‘Come on, Feel the Illinois’ when I was in undergrad.

And yes, he’s got a new record coming out – Carrie & Lowell – set to drop March 31, 2015.

Check out the trailer for the new album below:

Here’s some details via the press release we got this AM, and a link to buy the tickets when they go on sale this Friday:

Sufjan Stevens is a singer-songwriter currently living in Brooklyn, NY. A preoccupation with epic concepts has motivated two state records (Michigan & Illinois), a collection of sacred and biblical songs (Seven Swans), an electronic album for the animals of the Chinese zodiac (Enjoy Your Rabbit), two Christmas box sets (Songs for Christmas, vol. 1-5 and Silver & Gold, vol. 6-10), and a programmatic tone poem for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (The BQE). In 2010 Sufjan released an expansive EP (All Delighted People) and the full length The Age of Adz, a collection of songs partly inspired by the outsider artist Royal Robertson. His most recent release is a forthcoming album entitled Carrie & Lowell. The album comes out in March of 2015.

ON SALE: Friday, January 30th at 10:00am at eTix.com, Charge by phone at 1-800-514-3849, & Altria Theater Box Office (Mon – Fri 10am-5pm)
