“In honor of the legendary Oderus Urungus, we are proud to take part in this year’s GWAR B-Q,” said Dillinger guitarist Ben Weinman in a statement announcing the band joining the lineup along side Lamb of God, Against Me! and EYEHATEGOD. “After all, any band who sings songs about killing hippies and Skinheads while simultaneously condemning war and shooting many gallons of blood on the crowd are friends of ours!”
The Dillinger Escape Plan have been releasing tracks since the late 90’s, with their first full length album Calculated Infinity. The band’s mix of hardcore punk and prog/math riffs offered a creative alternative to the metal scene in a time when it was hitting an interesting emo-influence peak.
They built a bigger name for themselves touring with Mike Paton’s Mr. Bungle and offering notoriously brutal and high energy sets. A number of lineup changes even lead to Patton singing on the 2002 Irony Is a Dead Scene EP.
That same year the band made headlines in the UK when their new lead singer, Greg Puciato, took a shit in a bag live on the Reading Festival stage, threw it into the crowd and proclaimed “You’re going to see a lot of shit on this stage today… You might as well see some more.”
While this act wouldn’t be repeated, it did act as a life-long reminder for how few fucks Dillinger gives.
There’s been a number of notable moments for the band since, most recently they took over opening duties for Nine Inch Nails after Death Grips famously pulled out as openers for their nation-wide tour in 2014.
I caught Dillinger play with NIN back at the 2009 Bonnaroo and it became one of the most stand out and memorable performances of the festival that year:
Dillinger’s last full studio released was 2013’s One of Us Is the Killer which earned a 79% on metacritic with the folks at AllMusic noting on the band’s “shift toward playing to the listener’s gut rather than head,” gave the band “a newfound level of accessibility without diminishing the impact of their punishing sound.”
