Photos of The Smile Mesmerizing Richmond

by | Jul 7, 2023 | MUSIC, PHOTOGRAPHY

This week, The Smile ignited the stage at The National in Richmond, VA, delivering a knockout, sold-out performance that had the venue absolutely buzzing with energy. Amid a fiercely competitive press list, here is an electrifying array of images from this show-stopping gig. These snapshots were captured through the discerning lens of photographer Dylan Akers.

Emanating from the revered roots of Radiohead, The Smile – a dynamic cocktail of post-punk, progressive rock, Afrobeat, and electronica – burst onto the scene during the COVID-19 lockdowns. They seized the global spotlight with a riveting performance at the Glastonbury Festival’s livestream in May 2021.

Emerging from their creative cocoon in early 2022, The Smile unveiled their sonic prowess through six evocative singles, enchanting audiences across three unforgettable London shows. These potent live moments were broadcast worldwide, ensnaring fans and forging a fervent connection. Their critically lauded debut album, ‘A Light for Attracting Attention,’ hit the airwaves in May, under the deft hand of Radiohead’s orchestral virtuoso, Nigel Godrich.

Propelled by their burgeoning success, The Smile embarked on a blistering tour across Europe and North America, leaving fans hungry for their promised 2023 North American return. With two electrifying live EPs under their belt, they’ve elevated the tour experience and continue to brew fresh, captivating soundscapes in 2023.
