If you’re anything like me, one of the things you like to do when you come home exhausted late at night is to put on MTV and veg out for a while before bed. I’m not talking about the original MTV, either–the network of Jersey Shore and Teen Mom 2 no longer holds much interest for me. I mean the MTV channels that still show videos–MTV Hits or MTV-U or whatever I can find buried somewhere in the middle hundreds on digital cable. When I’m watching, I’m always surprised to see anything other than videos for top 10 R&B and teen-pop singles, but recently, I ran across an intriguingly catchy indie rock video in which a collage artist chases a guy who appears to be a carbon copy of himself through the crowded streets of a city. At the end of the video, I learned that the song, “My Body,” was by Young The Giant. I’m apparently not the only person whose interest has been piqued by this song–it reached the top 10 on the Billboard Alternative Singles chart, and Young The Giant performed it on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live in January. It’s even been on this season of American Idol–which is a dubious indicator of merit at best, but if nothing else means that a lot of people are paying attention. All of which is to say that this Wednesday night will probably be the last chance any of us get to see Young The Giant in an intimate setting like The Camel. Their music features excellent melodies and plentiful anthemic elements, making it similar to that of The Arcade Fire, and therefore tailor-made for the wide open spaces of bigger amphitheaters. But no amphitheater can compare to the visceral thrill of watching a band bring their music to you from ten feet away, atop a foot-high stage. That’s not something you’re going to want to miss where Young The Giant are concerned, and if you don’t show up at the show tomorrow night, you probably won’t get another chance at it. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
Also on the bill will be California alt-pop group AWOLNATION–which is the solo project of former Under The Influence Of Giants singer Aaron Bruno–and local up-and-coming melodic indie rockers Parlour Shakedown. There’s really nothing about this show that you’re better off missing, so make sure you get there on time!
