Obits are the latest band from San Diego creative genius Eric Froberg, aka Rick Fork, formerly of such rock n’ roll powerhouses as Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes. Froberg is without his longtime collaborator, John “Speedo” Reis, in this new band, but that fact doesn’t seem to have slowed him down any, and Obits guitarist/second vocalist Sohrab Habibion makes plenty of valuable contributions on his own account. Those who liked Froberg’s previous work will undoubtedly dig Obits, who continue in the vein Hot Snakes mined so efficiently–crossing chaotic hardcore punk with wire-tight garage rock. The second Obits album, Moody Standard And Poor, is set to drop next week on Sub Pop Records, and it adds some retro soul tinges to the sound they established on 2009’s I Blame You. The whole thing should make for a great show!

Obits aren’t the only reason to come to this show, either–local favorites Cloak/Dagger are always worth seeing. Their most recent release, 2009’s Lost Art, saw them picking up more of a rock n’ roll flavor than they had on their earlier work, which was in many ways an improvement. Their brand of hardcore punk mixed with garage rock should mix well with the Obits sound, while Flechette’s chaotic post-hardcore attack is more reminiscent of earlier Froberg bands like Drive Like Jehu and Pitchfork. The buzz is heavy for this new Richmond group, featuring former and current members of Field Day, The Two Funerals, and White Laces, and they’ve drawn a lot of comparisons to post-hardcore luminaries like Fugazi and Unwound. You’ll want to show up at the show early so you can check them out for yourself. When their just-recorded LP comes out in a few months, everyone’s gonna be all over them, so beat the rush, and get into them now.
