Video Premiere: Virginia Beach’s Feral Conservatives release ‘Round the Corner’

Virginia Beach’s twee/indie rock outfit Feral Conservatives have released a new video for “Round the Corner”, a pop/punky tune off their latest album, Here’s to Almost, which dropped via Egghunt Records in January.

It showcases the band’s splendid blend of pop melodies and punk energy and according to Matt Francis, drummer for Feral Conservatives, the band was trying to convey “noise” and technology/social media overload in the modern age.

“Enough has been said about noise in the “digital age” that at this point it just sounds like the last gasp of the Luddites,” he said. “We wanted to turn the idea on its head a bit and poke fan at ourselves — as a band, and a band’s presence online and how we contribute to the digital deluge.”

Francis, who also directed the video, added they were really into the idea of a band remaining “mysterious”.

“That allure, the cool factor, that gets pulverized by this need to sell our wares and find engagement in our online followers with a steady stream of attention-seeking content. So it’s a fun video,” he said.

“Round the Corner” dropped a few days ago and the band filmed the video in an empty gymnasium with about 1,500 square feet of aluminum foil-if you were wondering about the background.

And while “Round the Corner” tends to have more of an upbeat 90s vibe, that’s not all the Feral Conservatives are known for.

The band released “Twenty Eight” in March, a post-punk mockumentary which targeted Donald Trump.

RVA Mag’s own Doug Nunnally had the following to say in our Spring 2016 issue about the Feral Conservatives’ eleven-track album Here’s to Almost, a followup to their earl 2015 EP, The Feeling Noise Becomes:

“Fully realized twee music that’s as versatile as it is jangly from a Virginia Beach band on the Egghunt roster with a fearful musical bite. The band showcases the more well-known aspects of the classic C86 sound with indie pop treasures galore, but the album truly soars in moments of rumbling intensity that show of the often-forgotten origins of the genre.”

Feral Conservatives recorded the new album in spurts from February 2014 to August 2015 at Earthsound Recording in Chesapeake, Virginia. Here’s to Almost was engineered and produced by Mark Padgett and produced by Padget and mastered by Peter Linnane at Patch Hill Mastering in Boston.

Francis said they’ve been doing little mini-tours and plan to do a full tour in August, from North Carolina to Maine. They also have another video in the works, and the band isn’t giving too much away, but I’ll leave you with this to keep you in suspense.

“We are working with ballet dancers-full choreography, so that presents a new filmmaking challenge for us,” he said.
