Ladies and gentlemen, Beck is back! After the legendary (and notoriously uncategorizable) musician spent five years away from the world of new albums and major tours, he returned earlier this year with a new album, Morning Phase, and a new label, Capitol Records. Morning Phase has the same pensive, melancholy mood as Beck’s popular 2002 album, Sea Change, though it doesn’t feature the same emphasis on heartbreak as that one did. Which only makes sense for a happily married dude with two kids. But hey, the music’s still great. On the off chance you haven’t checked any of it out yet, here’s Beck and his band doing “Waking Light” on Jimmy Fallon earlier this year:

That performance makes for an excellent preview of what you’ll see when Beck takes the stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion next Thursday. A big band full of all sorts of different instruments, pulling out all the stops to recreate the lush musical ornamentation of Morning Phase in a live environment. And hopefully he’ll still have that tambourine guy with the big beard in the band too, because he’s awesome. Also, with Beck finally planning to release a recorded version of his originally-sheet-music-only album Song Reader, you may get to hear a live preview of what that record is going to sound like. Regardless, though, it’s Beck you’ll really want to see, and you’ll have that chance in just over a week, so secure your tickets now!
