Deer Tick are coming to VA, bringing their melancholy mix of Americana tradition and contemporary indie-rock to Charlottesville’s Jefferson Theater later this month, and you could see them for free! While their original sound was inspired by leader John McCauley discovering old-time country after years of playing heavy rock music, they’ve recently headed in more of a somewhat downbeat soul direction, as is obvious on their fifth album, Negativity, released last fall. The mix of Memphis R&B, Nashville Grand Ol’ Opry sounds, and blues taken straight from the Mississippi Delta is a hybrid sound that, regardless of side trips, retains a quintessentially Southern gothic feel. Not bad for a bunch of dudes from Rhode Island. Check out the video for Negativity‘s first single, “The Rock,” below:

Deer Tick’s traversing the South right now–they’ll actually be in Nashville tomorrow night–so they should have plenty of that inimitable creepy gloom all of us non-carpetbaggers are familiar with from our childhoods built up in their veins by the time they take the stage in Charlottesville on May 19. That’ll sure drive the point home when McCauley starts wailing his loneseome heart out and the rest of the band hits you with those high-powered riffs. Don’t you want to be there and experience it for yourself? Of course you do!
