Ladies and gentlemen, rock n’ roll! Robert Randolph is bringing his Family Band to Washington DC next week, and you could see their electrifying performance for free! Randolph, a pedal steel guitar player of extraordinary talent, got his start as part of the African-American Pentecostal tradition of sacred steel, but was eventually discovered by the secular music world, which he proceeded to conquer. Equally influenced by guitar-driven funk like Sly and the Family Stone and by blues-derived rock n’ rollers like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Randolph combines all of these formative inspirations into a high-energy sound that’s propelled by his outstanding steel guitar shredding. He shows off his talent and passionate live performance on “Amped Up,” the opening track from Robert Randolph and the Family Band’s latest album, Lickety Split–check it out here:

If you’d like to see an entire evening’s worth of that sort of eminently danceable awesomeness (and why wouldn’t you?), the 9:30 Club is the place to be next Wednesday night.
