The Canal Club, long known for hosting some of the city’s heaviest shows, hosted Obituary a few nights ago. The death metal titans shook the walls of the club in a blistering set that photographer Vincent Candela captured in a brilliant set of images.

For those that don’t know, Obituary is one of the pioneering bands in death metal, hailing from Tampa, Florida, and formed in 1984. Known for their brutal, down-tuned guitar riffs, growling vocals, and thunderous drumming, they helped define the genre’s sound in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Their debut album Slowly We Rot (1989) and follow-up Cause of Death (1990) are considered landmark records in death metal. Over the decades, Obituary has maintained a fiercely loyal fanbase, continuing to release bone-crushing albums and tour relentlessly, making them legends in the metal community.
