Photos | The Head and the Heart Bring a Misty, Magical Night to Richmond

by | Aug 8, 2025 | CULTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY, ROCK & INDIE

Last Friday, The Head and the Heart returned to Virginia, playing to a packed Allianz Amphitheater on a night that felt almost scripted for atmosphere. A light drizzle drifted down throughout the evening, cloaking the crowd in a gentle mist and giving the whole show an unplanned, cinematic touch.

For lead singer Jon Russell and drummer Tyler Williams, it was more than just another stop on the tour, it was a homecoming. We spoke with the band last week, and Friday’s performance carried that sense of return, connection, and joy.

The drizzle didn’t dampen spirits, if anything, it deepened the atmosphere. Fans swayed under ponchos, sang along to every chorus, and leaned into the shared warmth that only live music can bring. Under the glow of stage lights and the soft haze of mist, the band harmonies cut clean through the night air.

Midway through, the band welcomed Richmond’s own Landon Elliott to the stage, a friend Russell first met years ago at Poe’s Pub open mic nights, as he shared with the crowd. Elliott’s soulful vocals slipped effortlessly into the set adding a distinctly local note that made the moment feel even more special.

We also want to thank the band for the on-stage shoutout to RVA Magazine and WNRN, it’s always good to see Richmond’s music community recognized from the big stage. We appreciate it.

Overall It was a night of gratitude, for the band, for the fans, and for a city that still shows up in the rain to sing its heart out.

Joey Wharton was there once again for the photos.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is.
