RVA Magazine and Gallery 5 have reached our mutual 9th anniversary, and we want to spend it with you! Back in 2005, there were quite a few local artists and creative people looking for ways to work together and improve the local artistic community. Gallery 5’s mission was to bring, art, music, and other performance-oriented creative expressions to the community at large in a DIY, artist-run space, while RVA Magazine was designed to be a print publication that documented the artistic and creative community it was immersed in. We’ve spent the last near-decade accomplishing those goals and attempting to facilitate the artistic growth this city has seen in the years since (and no one can deny there’s been a good bit), and we’re still going strong–so it’s time to party!
This Friday, April 4, beginning at 7 PM, we’ll be celebrating in high style with an evening of music, art, and the fiery street performances that Gallery 5 (located at 200 W. Marshall St.) has become famous for. Gallery 5 will be presenting an exhibition of new work featuring a dozen local artists, including Amanda Robinson, Parker Galore, Bizhan Khodabandeh, Nicholas Crider, Todd Raviotta, Kevin Orlosky, James Robertson, Kim Nario, Ben May, Shawn Saharko, Ian Gamble, and Laura Hernandez. Additionally, Art On Wheels will be on hand, premiering the ballista they’ve built as part of their Veteran’s Impact Project. A ballista is an old-time military weapon used to hurl ballistic missiles at distant targets, and it basically looks like a giant crossbow, so what that premiere may entail is anybody’s guess. Slinging giant arrows down Marshall St. seems unlikely, but you never know.
Meanwhile, there’ll be music from local bands new and old, most of which have some traditional connection to Gallery 5. Goldrush, whose frontman, Prabir Mehta, has been booking his annual Ghost Of Pop celebrations of local music at Gallery 5 for several years now, will headline, and in fact, Prabir’s website, MyGlassesRule.com, are sponsoring the entire event. In addition, there will be performances from power-pop band Sleepwalkers and folk/Americana project The Blue And The Grey. And to top it all off, The Party Liberation Front will be mixing it up in the street outside the gallery, with plenty of fire-spinning, circus acts, and DJs Akasha and Reinhold keeping the tunes going throughout the evening.
This event is a fundraiser to help keep Gallery 5 in good shape; as Richmond’s oldest standing firehouse, it has a long history and always needs various repairs and maintenance. However, while the venue will be accepting donations, admission for the evening is free! So stop by, see some art, hear some great music, and celebrate the ninth anniversary of at least one, and hopefully two, of Richmond’s finest artistic institutions!
