Nothing like a story of the local food community coming together to help each other out. In early September, Little House Green Grocery, a small neighborhood grocery in Bellevue, suffered a fire that caused significant damage to their building and forced them to close for almost two months in order to rebuild. A setback like this is the sort of thing that can be fatal for a small business, but Little House was able to repair the damages and reopen earlier this month thanks in part to fundraising efforts by Ellwood Thompson’s.
Placing cooperation and community ahead of economic competition, Ellwood Thompson’s held a fundraiser to help Little House get back on their feet. Throughout the month of October, Ellwood’s took customer donations within their store to help with Little House’s renovation. At the end of the fundraiser, Ellwood’s matched all donations raised from customers, ultimately donating $1,146 to Little House’s renovation fund.
“How amazing is RVA’s food community? So amazing!” read the headline of an appreciative blog post from Little House upon learning of the fundraiser. For their part, Ellwood Thompson’s spoke highly of Little House, commenting on their website that “They provide local and organic food which upholds the values of the grocery as well as its farmers and producers.”
Little House Green Grocery reopened on November 2, and you can visit them every day from 9 AM to 7 PM at 1227 Bellevue Ave in Northside.
