Monument City Coffee and Records has closed its doors

Well another business in Richmond’s downtown area bites the dust – who would have thought Richmond couldn’t handle another coffee shop or record store… or a ken-taco-hut-like combo of the the two.

Well another business in Richmond’s downtown area bites the dust – who would have thought Richmond couldn’t handle another coffee shop or record store… or a ken-taco-hut-like combo of the the two.

We heard the news via Facebook earlier today; have a look at their post below:

All this sad news is a pretty big surprise, considering how pumped you all seemed to be when the place first opened. We spoke to the owners back in April of this year:

Monument City Coffee & Records just opened at 306 E. Grace St and has floors for both dining and records. Co-owner Eric Truitt said the idea came to him about a year ago.

“We started thinking of it last summer. Bobby Covert [the shop’s other owner] and I were both bartenders at Penny Lane at the time. We were thinking of ways to put music and food together in a way that worked for us,” Truitt said.

Keeping things local is a huge part of what Monument City Coffee & Records is doing — their coffee is from Lamplighter Roasting Co. and their donuts are from Sugar Shack.

There’s a saying here in Richmond: if your business lasts a year, you’re here for good. It looks like Monument City ended up on the wrong side of this theory.
