The music blog RVA Playlist turns 4 this month, and to celebrate its entering blogging middle age, founder Andrew Cothern is throwing a birthday party tomorrow at The Camel featuring three of his favorite local bands.

Blogging has always been a hobby for Cothern, who started RVA Playlist in 2010 while he wrote about local arts and music for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “The thing I hear constantly is there’s no really good music in Richmond, and that’s completely false,” said Cothern, who has been exposed to a lot of local music through various reporting jobs in Richmond.

RVA Playlist started as a collection of Cothern’s personal preferences, he said, but it has turned into “a resource for anybody who’s interested in local music.” Cothern’s interests run the gamut from hip-hop to indie pop, and the posts on RVA Playlist reflect that diversity.

“I honestly can’t say why I love it so much – I just do,” Cothern said of his passion for music. RVA Playlist fulfills his desire to share the music he loves with other eager listeners.

Tomorrow’s concert will feature The Trillions, Vexine, and My Darling Fury. He has been trying to have The Trillions play an RVA Playlist show for several years now, and this is the first time it worked out. Vexine and My Darling Fury are bands that he’s discovered in the last year and fallen in love with.

The free concert starts at 8 p.m. at The Camel – cake will be provided as well. For more information on the show or any of the bands, check the Facebook event page.
