What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing this week with beer releases and festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town, so hold on to your mugs.

This week, the local beer family honors Dave Baum of Billsburg Brewery — another beloved community member lost too soon. In recent beer news, The Veil Brewing Co. hosts Stout Mania, Stone Cold Steve Austin’s collaboration with El Segundo Brewing Company hits Virginia at last, and Hardywood drops their Pit Pit Hooray IPA next weekend.

Don’t miss a multi-release at Triple Crossing Beer, Black Cherry hard seltzers at Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, Garden Grove Brewing & Urban Winery’s 5th Anniversary party, and new releases with Isley Brewing Company, Intermission Beer Company, Fine Creek Brewing Company, and ice cream brews at Canon & Draw Brewing Company, among more.

Remembering Dave Baum, Founder of Billsburg Brewery

Before we kick off this week’s news from Richmond, we want to take a moment to honor the memory of Billsburg Brewery’s Dave Baum. This has been an extremely hard year for Virginia craft brewers in terms of grieving, and it’s only more heartbreaking to hear of another beloved member of the beer family’s loss.

Dave Baum, founder of Williamsburg’s Billsburg Brewery, passed on last week — and left an open place in hearts across the Commonwealth who knew him. We wanted to share this beautiful note from Billsburg in an ode to Dave:

“Dave and his family opened Billsburg Brewery in October 2017, but his dream began in 2008 with a passion for home-brewing. He brewed beer for friends, special occasions, weddings, and just for fun, but the most special part for him was the presence of friends who showed up on “brew days” to help and would spend an entire day with Dave. He not only loved to brew, he loved teaching others about craft beer and the process.

Originally, Dave’s vision for the brewery was to have a place where people could enjoy craft beer in a family- and pet-friendly environment, a “destination brewery,” as he called it, where people could come not just to drink beer, but to linger and enjoy the events and people at the marina. However, once the brewery opened, the dream grew into a platform for community activism, and Baum quickly became an advocate for non-profits and social awareness. He considered the brewery his legacy for his family, but this evolved into a community wide legacy of kindness and philanthropy. He worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for various local organizations through brewery events and collaborations.

Dave was only 46 years old. His family, friends, and patrons will never get to see the many other accomplishments and new adventures he had brewing, but his wish would be that others would be inspired that he took a chance on his dream and made it so much more than he ever thought possible.”

Our hearts go out to Dave’s family and his beer family at Billsburg. After Richmond’s loss of Mike Brandt at Garden Grove and Quy Pham at The Answer, we are all-too-familiar with this feeling this year — and we want our readers in Williamsburg to know we’re on your side during these hard times. Keep brewing on in life, friends.

PHOTO: The Veil Brewing Co.

Stout Mania at The Veil Brewing Co.

As we start into news around town this week, we’ll kick off events with The Veil’s Stout Mania coming up this Friday.

The brewery will be releasing several of their Imperial Stouts from the cellar, benefitting Richmond’s Hang Space, who are working through building relief at their location after a flood and water damage. To support this local business, make your way to The Veil this weekend and be a part of the proceeds in Stout Mania.

The Veil is also hosting their weekly can release, with great new brews like Culminate, No More Flowers, Mindzooms, Premium Sauce, and Petalz Orangeberry, along with the Intergalactic Tacos food truck. Per the usual calendar, releases went down last night in Richmond and will start tonight for our Norfolk folks.

PHOTO: El Segundo Brewing Company

Stone Cold Steve Austin’s beer hits Virginia

Here’s one you don’t see too often: Stone Cold Steve Austin himself, of the WWE, has partnered up with El Segundo Brewing Company out of San Diego to create a beer honoring the famous wrestler. Broken Skull IPA is finally making its way east this month, hitting Virginia in late February.

PHOTO: Stone Cold Steve Austin on Instagram

The IPA is expanding into brand-new states in 16oz four packs, along with El Segundo’s Mayberry IPA. This badass 6.7% ABV brew was designed by Stone Cold himself with the brewery, made especially for the working man and woman. It was brewed with Citra, Cascade, and Chinook hops for bold tastes with an easy-drinking texture, and as Stone Cold says, “Now stop reading and start enjoying this awesome beer! Cheers!”

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

Pit Pit Hooray can release at Hardywood

Something fresh is hitting Hardywood Park Craft Brewery for #FreshCanFriday next week, and we can’t wait to get a taste of it.

Pit Pit Hooray got its name from being so delicious it’ll “make you want to cheer.” We can’t argue with that logic, because this 7.5% ABV IPA is packed with some seriously-good flavors. Apricot puree comes together with Azacca hops to make this new take on a classic New England IPA extra bright and juicy, and according to its brewers, it’s soft in mouthfeel but full-bodied.

For the release, Hardywood’s hosting an Album Release Show with Kyle Davis, along with John Small, Johnny Hott, Bill Grishaw, and Trey Batts. Head out to the downtown location next Friday for great tunes and great beer, and let us know whether Pit Pit Hooray is the freshest favorite for you.

PHOTO: Triple Crossing Beer

Multi-release at Triple Crossing Beer

This Friday also brings a great new set of beers to Triple Crossing Beer out in Fulton. Illuminati Confirmed kicks off our news at Triple Crossing this week, a Double IPA that brings Citra and Mosaic into its recipe from Hidden Meanings. With flavors like tropical citrus orange, grapefruit rind, and melon-like kiwi, this 8% ABV brew brings a new combination to the brewery. According to Triple Crossing, this one was inspired when they realized they hadn’t paired the “heavy hitters of the new school hops” together — and also alone — yet.

Clever Girl is an old beloved favorite returning to the brewery this Friday, and it comes along with Pathway Pils. This new variation of their mainstay Pilsner was created with 100 percent German Pils malt, and at 5% ABV, it’s an easy drinker for a classic recipe. Triple Crossing says they pulled this one together with a yeast strain they’ve become fond of in brewing, with a propensity to “layer in a floral, almost lavender-like fermentation character” on top of its lemon, hay, sweet honey straw, and dry, zesty flavors.

PHOTO: Three Notch’d RVA Collab House

Black Cherry Hard Seltzer at Three Notch’d RVA Collab House

The photo above doesn’t directly correlate with the latest release at Three Notch’d RVA Collab House… but how could we not? This guy is named Boone, and he’s an adorable representation of the love for dogs in craft brewing. As much as I love a good beer, I’ve gotta say, the best part of hanging out at a brewery for me is definitely petting the dogs. That’s especially because mine — despite my best efforts — has no manners in public. So folks, keep bringing your pups out! I will be here to pet them. I promise.

All that said, the new Black Cherry Hard Seltzer at Three Notch’d is a dream and a half. Bringing the White Claw vibes into craft breweries is something we can definitely get behind, because it gives us some options for lighter drinks while still going to our favorite spots and supporting local brewing.

PHOTO: Isley Brewing Company

Fresh Brews at Isley Brewing Company

Our pals at Isley Brewing Company are offering some brand-new mixed four packs. If you’ve ever been to a brewery and couldn’t decide what you want, these are definitely for you: I know I can spend a solid ten minutes at the register to order every single time. There’s too many good things! How can we be expected to pick just one?

Thankfully, we won’t have to at Isley. If a Berliner Weisse is up your alley, head over for a sample of their latest combinations. The new four packs bring together their classic Berliner Weisse with variations like Strawberry Shortcake, Mixed Berry Pie, and Coconut Cream Pie. That last one really seals the deal for me, but there’s a flavor here for everyone.

PHOTO: Garden Grove Brewing & Urban Winery

Garden Grove 5th Anniversary

Happy birthday, Garden Grove! Our favorite Carytown brewery just celebrated their 5th anniversary on February 15, and they’re throwing a 5th Year Anniversary bash coming up on Monday.

Grab your tickets here for the event, which continues their ongoing Taproom Dinner Series with Alewife’s Chef Lee Gregory this month. With your ticket, you’ll get five courses of “mouth-watering cuisine” matched with five of Garden Grove’s beers, wines, ciders, and honey wines. And an extra note from Garden Grove — these events usually sell out, so you’ll want to grab tickets in advance if you plan to attend.

PHOTO: Intermission Beer Company

Work Spouse IPA at Intermission Beer Company

This Saturday, head out to Intermission Beer Company for a taste of their brand-new West Coast Style IPA. This gluten-reduced brew is perfect for folks with Celiac and for folks minding their diets, so it’s a no-guilt recipe for all the craft beer enthusiasts who need something lighter.

Work Spouse is a 7.1% ABV beer that brings out the citrus along with resinous hop notes. With a bit of malty sweetness to balance it all out, this IPA is a classic combination with some fresh flavors.

PHOTO: Fine Creek Brewing Co.

Wild Saison with Service Berries collab at Fine Creek Brewing Co.

Out at Fine Creek Brewing Co., the brewers recently collaborated with Fullsteam Brewery for a brand new Wild Saison with Service Berries beer. With light, fruity notes, this recipe is both balanced and complex for a perfect middle.

Along with Wild Saison with Service Berries, Fine Creek is hosting a Belgian Beer Day & Bottle Release this Saturday for their Avec Frère series. Adding in their Tractor Juice Belgian DIPA, they’re dropping the 5 Belgian Single, 7 Belgian Dubbel, 9 Belgian Tripel, and 11 Belgian Quad brews for the event.

According to Fine Creek, they decided to set the day up after lots of great feedback from each individual recipe — so they put them all together to let visitors taste them side-by-side. It’ll be a great opportunity to pick your favorite, because in our experience, every fresh taste of a recipe usually brings a “This is my new favorite!” to the table.

PHOTO: Richbrau Brewing Co.

Carver Imperial Milk Stout at Richbrau Brewing Co.

Richbrau Brewing Co. is bringing out a brand-new brew tomorrow night. Carver Imperial Milk Stout hits in at 10% ABV, and it’s the latest in their series inspired by the different neighborhoods of Richmond.

With cacao nibs and Ugandan vanilla beans, the chocolate and vanilla flavors are strong in this one for a perfect dessert stout. They’ll also be hosting live music tomorrow night starting at 7, so your Thursday night will bring a little extra fun to this week.

PHOTO: Kindred Spirit Brewing

Paid in Full can release at Kindred Spirit Brewing

The latest release at Kindred Spirit Brewing brings back a fan favorite to the Goochland brewery. Brewed with Centennial, Eukanot, and Simcoe hops, Paid in Full upped the hops with a dry-hop process in Simcoe and Citra.

If you’re looking for some fun this weekend, Friday is going to be packed with great events. After you head over to Hardywood, make sure to check out Kindred Spirit for a great night of food trucks and music with Third Rail and Saint Square.

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing Company

The Velvet Walrus on Raspberry release at Väsen Brewing Company

If you’re still feeling the love from Valentine’s Day, Väsen Brewing Company has something for you this week to keep it going. The Velvet Walrus on Raspberry just came out over the weekend for the holiday, and it’s a great final ode to winter before we welcome the warmer days of spring.

With dark chocolate and brown sugar flavors, this new variation adds hundreds of pounds of raspberry for a big, rich feel in this milk stout. It’s velvety smooth, according to its brewers, and it’s packed with the best of the fruity and sweet for a full Valentine’s inspiration.

PHOTO: Canon & Draw Brewing Company

Spumoni Stout at Canon & Draw Brewing Company

Another great Valentine’s release that came over the weekend is Canon & Draw’s Spumoni Stout. This one was brewed as a collaboration with Richmond’s Scoop RVA over on Strawberry Street in the Fan, and it’s all the ice cream dreams you could want in a beer.

This stout returned to Canon & Draw on the holiday, with Scoop RVA at the brewery to make ice cream beer floats on-deck. If you missed it last week, have no fears — this one’s available in 16oz four packs to-go, so you can still grab a set for yourself and pick your favorite flavors at home to make your own. Isn’t that sweet?

That’s it for this week’s RVA On Tap! As your weekly columnist, I’m here to take all your beer releases, event info, ideas and questions. If you’re a brewer, send me your release info at [email protected], and if you’re a beer enthusiast, drop me a line anytime to talk booze. Catch y’all next week!

This week, we’re getting ready for the holidays with tons of great events and releases.

Don’t miss Three Notch’d RVA Collab House’s statewide can release in their collab with Richmond band New Lions, Intermission Beer Company’s Fun Reimagined holiday market, and a great holiday party with Justin Golden at Canon & Draw Brewing Company.

We’ve also got juicy citrus brews at The Answer Brewpub, big awards for Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Crowl-A-Thons with Fine Creek Brewing, Center of the Universe Brewing’s Big Lebowski craft beer gift packs, Triple Crossing’s Classic Christmas, and new releases from Väsen, Ardent, Steam Bell Beer Works, and The Veil Brewing. Drink up, Virginia!

PHOTO: The Answer Brewpub

Pouring fresh at The Answer Brewpub this week is the juicy citrus punch we need to bring some bright flavors into the holiday season. With lighter hop notes and a strong fruit taste, I Need An Adult has already become a fan favorite at the brewery — and one drinker noted it might be their new favorite beer from The Answer entirely.

From the brewers themselves: “If you are in our brewpub and feeling unsure, just loudly and clearly say, ‘I need an Adult’,” and they’ll promptly bring you their latest juicy Double IPA from the taps. This DIPA was double dry-hopped with Mosaic, El Dorado, Cryo Simcoe, and Samba hops for a bold, rich brew that’s quickly becoming popular among its drinkers.

PHOTO: Center of the Universe Brewing

Center of the Universe is back with these limited edition Big Lebowski Gift Packs. With four of their best brews, COTU celebrates The Dude in all his glory with El Duderino, The Donny, The Jesus, and The Jeffrey.

Kicking off the brews, El Duderino is a White Russian Stout that brings the classic tastes of the milky, coffee-like mixed drink into a beer. The Donny is a Southern English-style Brown Ale for a bit of a lighter — but equally full-flavored — recipe, and it’s complemented by the Mecxican Hot Chocolate Stout-centered The Jesus. A special one in the bunch is The Jeffrey, which is only available before the holidays in these limited-edition holiday packs. Aged in Apple Brandy barrels, this Imperial Milk Stout even came with prizes on its details in last week’s Trivia Tuesday.

For more Big Lebowski-themed drinking, be sure to join COTU after the holidays for their Big Burleski event on the 27th (but stay tuned for more details on that next week).

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

Over at Hardywood, be on the lookout next week for a special Raspberry Stout release. In the meantime, we’ve got some awesome news in awards for the brewery. Hardywood’s Distorted Perception was recently named one of the Top 50 Beers for 2019 by Vinepair, and this juicy IPA got its name for a reason: Vinepair says “With our eyes closed, we could swear this was actual juice.”

The New England IPA is a hazy dream, and it was created to reflect some of the best fruit flavors in its honeydew, papaya, and lime notes. In its brewing process, Distorted Perception was dry-hopped with both Cashmere and Mosaic hops (one of my favorite combinations!) for a smooth 7% ABV brew. It originally came out back in late September as part of their #FreshCanFriday series, and if you’re looking to try it, keep your eyes peeled next year for its return to the brewery, along with many more fruit-forward IPAs.

PHOTO: Three Notch’d RVA Collab House

In more Saturday releases, Three Notch’d RVA Collab House is dropping their New Lions Blonde Stout in cans this weekend in collaboration with Richmond’s New Lions band. This is one of their most popular collab beers, according to Three Notch’d, and we can see why: along with the awesome name of New Lions’ music attached to it, this blonde stout is a very unique brew.

Made with vanilla, cacao nibs, and local coffee from Rostov’s, this beer is about as local as it gets. Blonde stouts can be hard to come by, so it’s definitely one you’ll want to grab a can of — plus this release is its very first in cans to be distributed statewide, and this is your chance to get the first batch in Richmond. It’ll also be on draft at the brewery in a $5 special, making it the perfect time to try it yourself (especially if you’re operating on a holiday budget like most of us these days).

PHOTO: Intermission Beer Company

Intermission Beer Company is also diving into the holiday events this week, with their Fun Reimagined Holiday Market this Saturday — and they’ve got the right idea bringing local vendors in to encourage holiday shopping with small business. With their Winter Warmer brew on draft, Intermission is ready to bring out their own holiday-spiced creation with vanilla, clove, and ginger flavors inspired by their friend’s ginger molasses cookies.

In this special holiday market, you’ll get an experience along with plenty of options for finding gifts. Vendors will get to take over the brewery for 15 minutes each during the event, giving demonstrations and teaching attendees about the process behind the product.

Participating vendors include Dharma Boutique RVA, Fairytale Fiberworks, Mug It All, Stephanie Mayton Illustrations, and Fun Reimagined: Richmond’s source for fun and unique card games. In that order, each vendor will get their time to shine in demonstrations like macramé bracelet-making, wool processing from raw fleece to spun yarn, mug-making, art tutorials, and how to play several of Fun Reimagined’s games.

The event starts at 3pm and runs until 7, so make sure to head out by 4 to catch all the demonstrations and learn more about your local vendors.

PHOTO: Fine Creek Brewing

If you’re looking for plans on the Sunday before Christmas, Fine Creek Brewing has you covered. They’re hosting their Christmas Sunday Celebration & Crowl-A-Thon on December 22, and they’re ready to get you in the holiday spirit.

With plenty of Christmas music from Koontz & Kellner and special Chocolate Peppermint desserts from Fine Creek Provisions, come cozy up at the farm and start your celebration week off right. For the beer, they’ve got discounts on crowlers (15% off with 3 or more!) in the Crowl-A-Thon to let attendees stock up on good brews to bring to all those holiday parties, where often there’s nothing outside of Bud Light, Miller, and that bottle of wine your grandmother has been keeping in the cabinet since last year. They also make for awesome gifts, so if you’re still in the last-minute shopping scramble, you can treat your loved ones to something we all appreciate: booze.

PHOTO: Triple Crossing Beer

In more holiday celebrations, head out to Triple Crossing Beer this Sunday for their Classic Christmas event. They’re getting extra-festive for the occasion, with tons of different activities to keep the whole family (and friend group) entertained.

Selfie-booth lovers will be pleased, so make sure to dress up accordingly to take photos and remember the day. Triple Crossing will also have blasts from the past with old-school Christmas movies, plus live Christmas music and wood-fired beer marshmallow s’mores. Keep up with their event page for more info on specific movies and times running through the day, and bring the kids out for the free all-ages event.

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing Company

Väsen Brewing Company’s got a double release coming up tomorrow night, with two fresh brews coming to the taps. First up is Moonbear Dubbel, a Belgian abbey-style ale created to warm its drinkers up in the midst of these chilly nights. With Madagascar vanilla beans, dark malts, and a light roasted taste, this beer is packed with all the perfect chocolate-vanilla combination. Väsen’s also releasing their Winter Harvest Double IPA on draft tomorrow, brewed with Citra, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops. Along with playing in their Geeks Who Drink Trivia Night, you’ll get to try this unique DIPA that brings out more than just fruit. Its flavors are full of dried fruit along with mango and pine, plus brown sugar to bring some holiday sweetness into the mix.

PHOTO: Ardent Craft Ales

Over the weekend, our pals at Ardent Craft Ales dropped their Amarillo Pale Ale. This 5% ABV recipe was brewed with Amarillo hops, dry-hopped and filled with lots of floral tastes to bring out its bold flavor. It came together with oats and wheat, along with English yeast, and according to its brewers, it drinks with a soft body and mild bitterness.

In events with Ardent, be on the lookout for A Christmas Vacation Kick-Off this Saturday at Lunch and Supper in Scott’s Addition. They’ll be selling tickets here before the event, so grab yours for all their food and wine pairings, along with festive cocktails from Lunch and Supper, throughout the evening until 11pm.

PHOTO: Canon & Draw Brewing Company

Here’s one I’m especially excited for. Canon & Draw Brewing Company is hosting a holiday party by one of my current favorite local musicians, Justin Golden, this Saturday at the brewery. Golden has played a lot of shows I’ve attended recently, most notably when he opened for the Tim Barry Novemberfest shows last month — and he’s got a great folk/country/indie sound. The lineup for this week’s event will showcase Sid Kingsley (another favorite Richmond musician of mine, who somehow I only manage to see when I’m in Roanoke), Tim Beavers II, Andrew Alli and Josh Small, and Tyler Meacham.

Along with great music, Canon & Draw has had a ton of great beer releases in the last couple months. Their taps are stocked with plenty of fresh recipes, so if you haven’t had an opportunity yet to get out and try some, this is a fantastic chance to see some great music and pair it with delicious beer.

PHOTO: Steam Bell Beer Works

The fine folks at Steam Bell Beer Works are bringing their Bourbon Barrel Tiramisu Stout back to the taps on Friday, and this one sounds especially awesome to me. After years growing up watching my mother eat tiramisu for breakfast, something about this sweet dessert just feels like home. I’ve also got a soft spot for it from working next to Virginia’s absolute best Balkan restaurant, Euro Bakery in Roanoke, for years — and eating its owner’s homemade tiramisu probably 5 days a week (plus more whenever a coworker at the bar didn’t finish their slice). It doesn’t get better than that, friends. At least until my body finally starts to reject the amount of sugar I’m capable of putting into it.

But still, there’s nothing quite comparable to a soft, fluffy tiramisu in all its ladyfinger-and-coffee glory. Steam Bell did an awesome job with this brew, and in addition to its classic dessert flavors, it was aged in A. Smith Bowman Distillery barrels to seal the deal. With vanilla beans, oak, and bourbon, this variation is full of “warmth and richness,” according to its brewers, that perfectly complement the roasted chocolate notes of the original Tiramisu Stout recipe.

PHOTO: The Veil Brewing Co.

Last night at The Veil Brewing Co., a December special made its way into the brewery. Holiday Treat Whangdoodle is made for coffee lovers, and the Imperial Chocolate Milk Stout is packed with flavors. You’ll catch maple syrup, cinnamon, and Colombian coffee (the best coffee out there, imho) from Blanchard’s Coffee, one of Richmond’s very best. According to its brewers, Holiday Treat Whangdoodle brings forward warming, viscous liquid fudge, baking spices, and holiday cheer. It’s out now in bottles, and to grab one of your own, head over to The Veil this week for a chance to bring the 10.5% ABV stout home with you before it’s gone.

RVA ON TAP: The Return of Pumpkin (Finally)

Caley Sturgill | August 28, 2019

Topics: Ardent craft ales, beer, beer column, canon and draw brewing company, double ipa, Fine Creek Brewing Company, Hardywood, Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery, pumpkin, RVA On Tap, Steam Bell Beer Works, Stone Brewing-Richmond, three notchd, Triple Crossing Beer, vasen brewing

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing this week with beer releases and festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town — so hold on to your mugs!

This week, we’ve got some great new releases from the brewers across Richmond, and HUGE big exciting news that I’ve been waiting a long time for. If you read this somewhat regularly, you’ll probably know (and be tired of) my summer woes and the desperate wait for fall… so you’ll know why I’m so pumped this week for:

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

The moooooost wonderful tiiiiiiiime ooooof the yeeeear!

FINALLY, fall is almost here, and the best tastes of the year are coming back. I’ve been waiting very impatiently since the end of last fall for another one to begin, and this beautiful short season better stick around longer this time.

If you’ve been eagerly-awaiting the return of pumpkin to your life, you’re not alone. Catch me in a flannel and dirty old boots eating an entire pie to myself and living my best life, I don’t care. I’m so happy this hell of a summer is almost over.

Our buds at Hardywood have the perfect beer to commemorate the happiest season of all: Farmhouse Pumpkin. It’s making its way back to the taps this Saturday, much to my enjoyment. This classic Richmond favorite is brewed with saison yeast, over 1,000 pounds of Virginia-grown sugar pumpkins from Grandma’s Pumpkins RVA, three pounds of whole nutmeg, clove and allspice, and over four pounds of fresh ginger root from the local Casselmonte Farm out in Powhatan. This farmhouse brew is soft on the tongue, with a great amount of rustic fall flavors to ring in the cold nights and changing leaves.

God, I’m so happy. I’ve been waiting to write this blurb for months. Go get a pumpkin beer! Also, in more great news, Hardywood’s dropping Union Break in cans on Friday, a delicious Belgian-style White Ale that took 10-hour days from the packaging team to bring to life — with plenty of stoic dedication, sorcerous endurance, and a steady diet of energy drinks, according to Hardywood. And, obviously, a big dose of 80’s heavy metal. This beauty is coming out for #FreshCanFriday right before the big pumpkin release, so if you ever needed a reason to spend an entire weekend at Hardywood, you’ve definitely got one now.

PHOTO: Ardent Craft Ales

Out at Ardent Craft Ales, the Leigh Street DIPA can release is going down tomorrow night. This beer made its debut a while back, but it’s returning to us in cans with its big, juicy flavor that was double dry-hopped. In its brewing, Ardent used only Mosaic hops, so it’s packed with the tropical, fruity flavors and aromas its hops are known for.

This is actually my current favorite beer-type, because it’s up there in alcohol at 8% ABV, but still soft to the taste. You’ll catch a low bitterness with this one, but still the classic bold flavors you expect from a brew that’s been through a double dry-hopped process. This is one I definitely don’t want to miss a taste of, so if you’ve got similar taste, swing by for a set while you can.

PHOTO: Triple Crossing Beer

Falcon Day! Triple Crossing Beer’s got something awesome brewing, with a giant four-part release coming up this Friday. You’ll have to bounce back and forth between their downtown and Fulton locations if you want to try all four, but my bets are on that you won’t need so many. Triple Crossing’s Fulton spot is one of my favorite in town, and not too far from Stone Brewing Richmond if you’re looking to make a brewery-hopping evening out of it.

Beloved favorites are coming out in cans and crowlers to bring the full series out at once, with Falcon Smash IPA’s Retro Can Release at both locations, Space Falcon IPA and Falcon Heavy DIPA at just Fulton on Friday, and finally, Baby Falcon Session IPA in crowlers only at both locations.

PHOTO: Stone Brewing Richmond

Also on Friday, make a pit stop in the East End at Stone Brewing Richmond for the release of their Mango Maya Milkshake IPA in collaboration with Rusty Burrell.

To bring this beer to life, Stone partnered up with the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) to host a people’s choice-style homebrew competition in Richmond. The winner, Robert “Rusty” Burrell, was chosen to brew in collaboration with Stone — and perhaps a reason for him to feel extra-lucky, his beer will also be entered into the annual Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am coming up later this year.

Rusty himself will be hanging out at the brewery on Friday evening, so stop by our favorite East End spot for a taste of your own and give him a cheers for his success.

PHOTO: Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery

A lot has been brewing at Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery lately, in these brand-new collaboration beers with Three Notch’d RVA Collab House.

Starting off, The Source Blueberry Milkshake IPA looks like it’s absolutely to-die for. They’ve also got Juicy #14, which if you remember from last week, sounded amazing. The two brewers together also released The Source IPA, brewed with lactose for the perfect texture.

Lickinghole and Three Notch’d are two of my favorites in this huge sea of breweries that we call Richmond, because there’s nothing quite like an evening on the farm with Lickinghole (especially when the sunflowers are out for picking), and because I’ve spent many an evening with Three Notch’d down at their spot in my hometown, Roanoke. They were a welcome addition to Roanoke’s downtown, which is slowly growing with a number of breweries of its own, and they’re doing some awesome things up here in Richmond at their RVA Collab House.

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing Company

Over the weekend at Väsen Brewing Company, Azanian Passion came out in all its hazy, New England-style Double IPA glory. Another Double IPA right up my alley (and hopefully up yours, too), Azanian Passion has some intense hop aromas “leaping” from each glass, which are brought to you by its perfectly-balanced combination of Azacca, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Southern Passion hops. It’s also packed with tropical flavors like pineapple and passionfruit, which are complemented by its different piney and floral notes. According to the brewers, it’s moderately bitter and intensely hoppy, so you’ll find yourself somewhere in the middle of the traditional IPA flavors.

PHOTO: Fine Creek Brewing

Out at Fine Creek Brewing, a Friday Beer Feature dropped over the weekend that sounds like earthy dessert in a glass. Hudson Henry Granola Stout hits in at 7% ABV, and this traditional oatmeal-stout inspired brew was made in collaboration with the Hudson Henry Baking Co.

Rather than the oats of a traditional recipe, Fine Creek swapped for original granola to bring out some *delicious* maple, pecan, and coconut flavors. You’ll taste mild roasted grain flavors in this one, and even more with maple syrup, roasted malt, cafe con leche, and subtle toasted coconut… plus highlights of chocolate, vanilla, and dark roast coffee. Does it get any better than that? I’ll be damned, I don’t think it does.

PHOTO: Canon & Draw Brewing Company

Tonight at Canon & Draw Brewing Company, head over for a tasty (and hilarious) release. Canon & Draw has been running a series lately that they call the “Tim & Matt Awesome Beer Great Job!” IPA Series, which has featured great flavors like tropical fruits and floral aromas, with orange and grapefruit juice, plus hints of pine.

Next up in the series is Season 2, which you can taste anytime after 2pm today at the West Main Street brewery — so if you’re reading this in the morning and already craving a new beer, they’ve got you covered for day drinking after lunch.

PHOTO: Steam Bell Beer Works

A new American Barleywine is on its way to Steam Bell Beer Works this Friday, and if you’ve never tasted a Barleywine, get prepared. These thick, dark beer-wine mashups are heavy on the throat, but lord, they taste good.

If you’re not big on stouts and porters, this one might not be for you — but if you got as excited as I did for Fine Creek’s granola stout, this might just be up your alley. Hitting in at 10.6% ABV, you’ll want to go easy on the drinking, and you can grab it on draft or take it to-go if you think you’re better off not having to call that Uber afterward. Either way, a good Barleywine can be really hard to find in the city, so Steam Bell’s latest release is one you’ll want to get a taste of one way or another while you can!

RVA ON TAP: Syrup, Honey, & The Sweet Brews of Summer

Caley Sturgill | July 17, 2019

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing this week with beer releases and festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town — so hold on to your mugs!

This week, we’re diving into the hottest temperatures of the summer so far  with lots of fresh brews to keep you cool (and one special beer to help poor warm-blooded folks like myself reminisce on colder, happier times).

PHOTO: Fine Creek Brewing Company

Love is alive in Virginia! More local spots are carrying on the 50 Years of Love Campaign celebrations this week, with a Weizenbock release from Fine Creek Brewing Company. This special-edition beer was brewed to bring out all the best qualities Virginia Maple Syrup has to offer, brewed with 50 pounds of it right here from the Old Dominion. Back Creek Farm provided the delicious, syrupy goodness to make this recipe a success, and it’s got a story with its own history of love to complement its role in this heavy wheat beer’s taste.

According to Fine Creek, Back Creek Farm has been around for generations making batches of syrup on their land. The area used to be home to many different farms with sugar houses, but Back Creek is the last left remaining after the years. Their syrup has a rich, smoky flavor from its cooking process over wood fires, with the same process their current owner used when he was 8 years old and working with his father.

You’ll get a taste of the past in this brew, as Back Creek is still using the buckets and original open pan that were passed down by their great-grandmother on the farm. If the 50 Years of Love Campaign is all about sharing what you love, this farm has decades of stories and full hearts to share theirs. I’m excited to see Fine Creek pairing up with them to make this Weizenbock, on one hand because I’m something of a syrup enthusiast, and on another because I know as a rural girl in my own heart that the best stuff doesn’t come from a store. That’s love, y’all.

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

I doubt many of y’all will remember me from back then, but a few years ago when I first joined the magazine as an intern back in college, I wrote a feature on Minor Poet’s “River Days” when it came out. That song was an excellent ode to summertime in Richmond, and the endless-feeling days that come along with it.

Hearing about Hardywood’s new River Daze release brought back some great memories of that summer, and like every summer in the River City, it looked a lot like this one — days spent by the James with good friends and good beers. River Daze is a great way to jump-start your weekend (especially looking at that 100° Saturday forecast) with a lighter 6.0% ABV New England-Style IPA. This warm-weather beer was brewed with Nelson, Cascade, and Eureka hops to crush the heat and keep your summer days rolling on — and don’t forget to put on some Minor Poet while you’re at it.

PHOTO: Final Gravity Brewing Co.

Not all who wander are lost, right? Right… at least for Final Gravity Brewing Co., because this beer is anything but lost. Wandering Star was brewed with many flavors and hops in mind, and beloved by drinkers at the brewery, it’s right on point. It returns to the brewery this Friday, and  the 8.0% ABV Double IPA was cooked up with a whirlpool of Citra hops and dry-hopped with Mosaic to bring out its tropical fruit flavors, like orange, lime, and grapefruit.

PHOTO: Three Notch’d RVA Collab House

Two of my faves came together this week to bring out a sweet honey brew. Three Notch’d RVA Collab House partnered up with Black Heath Meadery to drop A Little Dab of Honey over the weekend — a Honey Wheat Ale made especially for the season. If you’re looking for a taste of nature in your glass, this is your guy. You’ll find flavors of wildflower honey in this light, 6.3% ABV beer, and a great collab between two beloved Virginia brew teams.

This one will go fast, according to Three Notch’d, and they want to make sure you remember to swing by Black Heath Meadery if you’re in the neighborhood as well. If you remember from earlier this month, Black Heath just released their Aw, Shmucks strawberry mead to give us the best fruity flavors in a very appropriately-colored beer — it looks just as it tastes, like strawberry jam and alcohol came together in your mug for a great summer infusion. Peanut butter not required.

PHOTO: Isley Brewing Company

Here’s something I haven’t seen before in Richmond! Isley Brewing Company is dropping their Pistachio Pilsner infusion this Friday, and they’re the first I’ve heard to use this awesome nut flavor in a beer since I’ve been your columnist. Back in the day, I remember pistachios being a huge thing almost out-of-the-blue when pistachio ice cream first became popular, and since then, I’ve seen it all around in various foods — but never drinks! I can sit down and slam a pound of these bad boys in a sitting on any given day, so I’m all open to trying them in beer. This is definitely one we’ll be looking forward to, so make your way over to Scott’s Addition to give it a taste and let us know how you liked it.

PHOTO: Strangeways Brewing

Cheers to our friends at Strangeways for this awesome release over the weekend. Hotel Del Coronado just dropped on Saturday at the brewery, a West Coast Double IPA that hits in at 8.6% ABV (and at 92 IBU, you can expect some nice bitter flavors from this one). Hotel Del Coronado was brewed with Pilsner malt, Honey malt, Brasetto Rye, and Murphy & Rude Belgian Amber Malt to make an “aggressively bitter” — go easy on it, folks — Double IPA with dank and piney tastes.

With its double dry-hopped process, this brew has a complex but clean base after its initial hop additions. Simcoe and Green Bullet hops are prominent, with a great homage paid to San Diego flavors and all of you “hop heads” out there, as Strangeways notes.

PHOTO: Canon & Draw Brewing Company

Now on to some events: Oyster Feeest! Hope you like slimy sea bugs in your mouth, because Canon & Draw Brewing Company partnered up with White Stone Oyster Company and Texas Beach Bloody Mary Mix to bring you a day packed with the shelled delicacies and all the best drinks you’ll want to go with them.

Oysterfest is going down this Saturday at Canon & Draw, with oysters of all kinds for any variety of tastes. With steamed oysters, Micheladas, oyster shooters, Bloody Marys, and the brewery’s excellent new take on River City Tap Water, there’s something for everyone — so as long as you like seafood, bring your appetite.

PHOTO: Steam Bell Beer Works

On its way to Steam Bell Beer Works is an amazing combination: Ginger Ale and beer! Extra Plenty Ginger Gose Ale is heading out to the brewery soon, and just look at these roots:

PHOTO: Steam Bell Beer Works

As a reminder from Steam Bell, you should never judge a flavor by its color. These pale, white ginger roots pack a ton of flavor in any drink they’re added to, and the upcoming beer release is no exception. I’ve been on a huge ginger ale lemonade kick lately, so this is right up my alley. By the way, if you’re new to that duo, do yourself a favor and go grab a case at Kroger. Trust me.

Steam Bell also wants to remind us that even in the middle of summer, stout season never ends. They’ve got their Tiramisu Stout ready to go this July, and these are two of my most favorite things to come together for a beer. Last winter, you could find me more excited with every passing week for the heavy flavors of the season, and dessert-infused brews that marry the sweet with the bitter. You can look forward to that enthusiasm finding its way back as soon as this hellhole season is over and my perfect cold days return to me. But for now, thank god someone’s offering up a taste of better times in the middle of this muggy summer in the city.

RVA ON TAP: Let’s Get Fruity

Caley Sturgill | March 27, 2019

Topics: Black Heath Meadery, canon and draw brewing company, Champion Brewing Company, Fine Creek Brewing Company, garden grove, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Isley Brewing Company, the answer brewpub, The Veil Brewing Co.

This week, we get to vote on our favorite local breweries (only until tomorrow!) and check out a few new releases coming up. We’re off to a slower week to follow up on the last one, which was totally packed with events, and some awesome tastes this time to keep rolling into the warmer weather.

Before we jump into the goings-on of the week in beer, head over to NBC12 to vote for your favorite local breweries in their Brewery Bracket. This is a really fun way for the drinkers of the city to give their input back and vote for the ones who they keep coming back to — it’s honestly hard to pick between a lot of these choices, but voting ends tomorrow night, so make sure to hop on it while you can!

Happy 4th birthday, Black Heath Meadery!! Come out and celebrate all weekend long, hosted at The Hive in Scott’s Addition. They’ll be featuring special mead releases every day, starting Friday off with a Bourbon Barrel Aged Sour Cherry with Vanilla mead, which just in its own name sounds absolutely mouthwatering. Following up on Saturday, grab a taste of Black Heath’s ZZQ Smoked Pear Cyser, and close out the weekend’s events with their Barrel Aged Ginger Lemongrass Cider on Sunday.

In new brews this week, check out Isley Brewing Company’s Pineapple IPA that’s dropping for their weekly Infusion Friday. It comes along with many in the season of fruity-IPA’s, and we’re stoked to see more of these coming out around town. Isley will be hosting the release at their spot in Scott’s Addition with the Right On Time Mobile Diner, so check it out if you’re feelin’ fruity (aren’t we always?) and taste one for me, too.

Yesterday, The Veil Brewing Co. dropped Never Never Rest Rest, a new Gose brew in their series of “Never” beers that keeps going strong. With a history of beers like Never Never Forever Forever, Never Again, Never Never Again Again, Never Never Gonnagetit Gonnagetit, Never Never Aloha Aloha, and still so many more that are certainly going to twist my tongue if I keep going — Never Never Rest Rest is still a special one of the bunch. This Gose is packed with double guava and double raspberry to bring in the fruits again, and at 5.1%, it’s a solid day-drinker for the flavor outdoors.

Head over to Richmond’s sweethearts on Saturday for the release of Bourbon Cru. Hardywood is dropping this bad boy with its rich mahogany color this weekend, and it’s brewed to mimic the fashion of the revered monastic breweries of Belgium. After months of barrel-aging, according to Hardywood, the “maturity and melding of flavors” that’s brought on by the freshly-drained bourbon whiskey barrels “lends an extraordinary sense of harmony” to this special beer.

For flavor, you’ll get a lot of tastes of almond, toffee, and oaky vanilla with hints of dark cherries and raisins, with caramel overtones to top it off — and as usual, me drooling at my keyboard while I write about it. Holy yum, y’all.

If you’re looking for fun on a weeknight, head over to Champion Brewing Company tomorrow for the Untz Festival Richmond Pre-Party featuring Secret Recipe Music. You’ll also catch the Wormhole Music Group and Mister Jennings, Richmond’s “sherpa of swing” according to Champion. They say you should come prepared to get absolutely-down from the moment the doors open, so make sure to pregame and get the fun rolling on before you walk in for an instant party. The whole show’s put together by Ebisu Sound and Home Bass, and it’ll be an awesome spot in a series of events at Champion over the season. Get your jam on, Richmond!

Over the weekend, Garden Grove had several releases that you’re definitely gonna want to try. Fruit Bomb IPA is first up, and this blend of Citra, BRU-1, and New Zealand Rakau hops is packed with spring fruitiness and wild yeast. To offset the warm weather brews, Garden Grove also dropped a Chocolate Imperial Stout to bring in a rich flavor with its real-chocolate flavors and Sumac Berries. It’s full of complex tastes that bring out a long, chocolatey finish, so if you’re hanging on to winter this one’s for you!

Earlier last week, The Answer Brewpub dropped One Beer, a collaboration brew with Black Ninja Design and 8Bit Adam Kaufman. This one was brewed up with hops like Motueka, Falconer’s Flight, and El Dorado — and like always at The Answer, it comes in a badass glass. Also like always: the good ones go fast! So make sure to swing by and grab a taste of this One while you can.

Also over the weekend, Fine Creek Brewing Company had a special release for their Friday Beer Feature. This New Zealand Saison comes in at 6%, and it’s dry-hopped and made with a house Saison yeast as its base to bring out its lemon-lime, zesty smells with its fruity ingredients. It’s also boosted with pear flavors from the yeast with layers of tropical fruit, and it’s available out at the brewery on tap, in Growlers and in Crowlers.

Happy 1st birthday, Canon and Draw Brewing Company!! Two birthdays in one week — how lucky is that? For their birthday, Canon and Draw just dropped their *first ever* bottle release, so it’s definitely a special occasion! But first, story time.

Last year, “with nothing but good spirits and an old van,” the folks behind Canon and Draw made a personal pilgrimage to ol’ Frankfort, Kentucky to retrieve some gold: retired barrels from the Buffalo Trace Distillery’s finest reserves, from a special friend of the owners. From those barrels was born Le Confort Du Vide, C&D’s American Barleywine that was made in just one barrel of the adventure’s haul — and it’s been sitting quietly for over a year waiting to be freed. They made it special for their first anniversary, and its tastes sound like a dream. Brown sugar, vanilla, and bourbon blend with layers of caramel in this birthday brew that even out each taste to complement the gentle bitterness of its American hops. With a “pleasant warmth,” this one-time-recipe celebrates the warmth of the season alongside the warmth of celebrating your first trip around the sun. Congrats, Canon and Draw!
