Deadly Drag Comes To River City Roll This Sunday

Jimmy O'Keefe | October 25, 2019

Topics: bowling, Deadly Drag Halloween Ball, Halloweek, James Millner, River City Roll, scotts addition, va pride

You might not expect to find a drag show at a bowling alley, but that’s exactly what you’ll find if you show up to River City Roll this Sunday night.

Located in Scott’s Addition, River City Roll is a boutique bowling alley that offers skeeball, tabletop shuffleboard, and, of course, bowling. With menu items such as “roasted jerk pork belly,” “ginger glazed chicken bowl,” and “grilled chicken bahn mi sandwich,” it’s clear that River City Roll isn’t your typical bowling alley. And the event they’re presenting this weekend is a further demonstration of that fact.

This Sunday night, River City Roll will be hosting the Deadly Drag Halloween Ball. Featuring five drag queens and a live DJ, a portion of proceeds and tips from the show will benefit Virginia Pride.

This won’t be the first time River City Roll has hosted a drag show benefitting Virginia Pride. The bowling alley hosted an even called Queens Strike the Runway over the summer.

“During our first event … we rolled out the red carpet for Richmond’s most talented Queens,” said River City Roll co-owner Rob Long. “We added an interesting twist, with the permission of the Queens: I joined them in the performance and was the final act of the show.”

This time, it will be co-owner Ben Eubanks dressing up in drag and greeting guests as they arrive.

Aside from Eubanks, queens Amber St. Lexington, Monica Darling, London Lestrange, Shanita Quit, and Michelle Livigne will be hitting the stage, with DJ Elliott Ness providing some music.

“The artistry of these drag queens — and I’ve seen some of the promotional photos that they’ve done, and their halloween-themed makeup and outfits — is ridiculously over the top,” said James Millner, president of Virginia Pride. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before.”

“We have five of the most talented drag queens in Richmond participating, and I think people are going to be in for a real show,” Millner said.

Aside from raising money for Virginia Pride, Millner said that events like the Deadly Drag Halloween Ball at River City Roll are important because they help to engage members of the community in Richmond that wouldn’t typically attend a drag show.

“At the last drag show, there were folks that were older, not from the LGBTQ community … and I guarantee that a lot of those folks had never even been to a drag show,” Millner said. “It allows us to put front and center an LGBT organization and the conversation about the importance of what the LGBT community contributes to the broader Richmond community.”

“We love to partner with organizations like Virginia Pride that share a common goal of creating celebrations that advocate equality,” Long said. “It is important to use these special events to help raise money and give back, monetarily, to the organizations that are doing such great work in our communities.”

Doors for Deadly Drag Halloween Ball will open at 6 PM on Sunday, October 27. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and can be purchased on Eventbrite. River City Roll is located at 939 Myers St. The event is 21+.

RVA ON TAP: Hallobeer, Booz Crawls, & Punk’in Carver Parties

Caley Sturgill | October 23, 2019

Topics: Ardent craft ales, beer, beer column, Bingo Beer Co, Black Heath Meadery, Blue Bee Cider, Buskey Cider, Castleburg Brewery, Cobra Cabana, courthouse creek cider, Hallobeer, Halloweek, Halloween, Hardywood, Isley, Isley Brewing Company, Lickinghole Creek, Reservoir Distillery, RVA On Tap, Stone brewing, strangeways, The Answer, The Veil Brewing Co., Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, three notchd, Vasen Brewing Company

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing this week with beer releases and festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town, so hold on to your mugs.

This week, you’ll have so many choices for events that you won’t be able to attend enough in one day. Hardywood Park Craft Brewery is kicking off HALLOWEEK with their Haunted Food Truck Court tomorrow night, Hallobeer is going down at The Answer Brewpub, Cobra Cabana is hosting Stone Brewing Richmond for a Punk’in Carver party, the Scott’s Addition Booz Crawl is back, and Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery is hosting a costume party — and that’s only the beginning.

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

It’s the mooooost wonderful tiiiiiime of the year! Halloween is right around the corner, which means HALLOWEEK is back at RVA Magazine. Hardywood Park Craft Brewery is releasing a beer as the official beer of the week, Farmhouse Pumpkin. In the spirit of the season, HALLOWEEK means all the awesome beer, shows, events, and haunted houses you can take in one week. It’s kicking off with our pals and co-hosts at Hardywood, starting fresh tomorrow night with the Haunted Food Truck Court at Hardywood. They’ll be dropping a “ghoulish” new brew, hosting food trucks with Halloween-inspired menus, “devilish” selfie stations, and — of course — costumes galore!

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

Come dressed in your best and grab goodies from the Richmond Zombie Walk, plus get tips on how to make the best costumes of all from Aisthesis Productions (the hands behind the scariest costumes around, and the recent locally-produced horror movie Last Call). As Aisthesis says, “Less Bore, More Gore.”

Hardywood’s also releasing their Quydrawine in bottles this Friday, honoring the beloved Quy Pham of The Answer Brewpub. This barrel-blended ale was brewed with inspiration from Quy, with his positivity and generosity that will stay in the hearts of his loved ones forever. Quydrawine is a bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Stout blended with a hyper-hopped fresh American barleywine — which means it’s packed with big, burly, bold flavors “that will Kong even the strongest of late night warriors.”

In more Hardywood news, Trickery (pictured first) is coming back out this Saturday at the brewery. Another Imperial Stout, this milk stout hits in at 13.5% ABV with ten months under its belt in apple brandy barrels. It has flavors of blackstrap molasses — yum! — with warm caramel and chocolate-covered cherries, to bring out the fall love in us all.

PHOTO: The Answer Brewpub

Speaking of events honoring Quy, The Answer Brewpub is hosting their extra-awesome 13th Annual Hallobeer on Monday, with Mekong Xpress playing the music of Elvis all night long.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Quy’s family, and in addition to tunes by The King himself throughout the evening, The Answer will be putting out some special drink releases. They’ll also have a Street Fighter tournament for those who are interested, plus costume contests with prizes if you want to come out in your best-dressed Halloween costumes (or Elvis getups, according to The Answer) to celebrate Halloween and Diablo.

PHOTO: Cobra Cabana & Stone Brewing Collab

Two of my favorite places in one event!! Stone Brewing Richmond is partnering up with Cobra Cabana for the Punk’in Carver Party — nice puns, y’all — with pumpkin carving in Richmond’s Carver neighborhood. With the best beer at the best spot, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Local pumpkins from Gallmeyer Farms will be on deck, and carving tools will be provided (but in true punk fashion, your crusty old pocket knife will also work just fine). Stone’s bringing out their special release, Ghost Hammer IPA, for the occasion to go along with the regular beers on the patio, so if you’re too cheap for craft beer this week, a $3 Lone Star will do. And for the witchier of us, Madame Onça will be out doing Tarot Card readings!

They’ll also have DJ Al Hitchcock out “spinning spooky tunes” through the evening, and fundraising efforts will benefit the Halloween Parade.

PHOTO: Scott’s Addition Booz Crawl

Boozy neighborhood friends rejoice: the Scott’s Addition Booz Crawl is back, and it’s happening all day this Saturday. If you’re an adult who is bummed by the no-trick-or-treating-without-kids rules of society, then this is good news for you.

The Booz Crawl lets you bounce around “trick-or-treating” through the neighborhood to try all the beer, ciders, meads, and whiskeys of the neighborhood. If you pick up Booz Crawl cards at the spots on the list, you can even win a $25 gift card individually to each location from getting three unique stamps at the breweries and being entered to win.

Participating breweries include (in alphabetical order) Ardent Craft Ales, Bingo Beer Co., Black Heath Meadery, Blue Bee Cider, Buskey Cider, Courthouse Creek Cider, Isley Brewing Company, Reservoir Distillery, Strangeways, Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, Vasen Brewing Company, and The Veil Brewing Co.

PHOTO: Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery

It’s costume time on the farm! Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery is hosting a Halloween Costume Party this Saturday complete with bonfires to bring fall’s best activities all together. There’s nothing like the smell of a fire pit or hanging out on a farm when it first gets chilly outside, and I couldn’t be happier this time of year.

If you’re down for the drive, head out to Goochland for one of my most favorite spots in the area. They’ll have live music rolling all evening with Mobius Strip, plus eats from the Firesides food truck, and probably the best part of all, always lots of dogs. I meet the cutest dogs when I’m out there, and if you haven’t seen their farm, it’s truly something special to find this close to the city. Lickinghole Creek is a gem, and this is the best season to spend some time with them.

PHOTO: Isley Brewing Company

Happy birthday, Isley! I just love this brewery, and I’m stoked to see them complete another trip around the sun.

Isley Brewing Co. is celebrating their 6th birthday this Saturday with tons of limited releases, live music, giveaways, games, and food trucks to accompany the Scott’s Addition Booz Crawl. They’ll be giving away VIP cards to the 6th and 66th guests at the brewery for *four free drinks per day!!* at Isley for the entire month of November. If that isn’t something to get stoked about, I don’t know what is.

Beer releases and returns throughout the week leading up to the event include: Cookies & Cream Porter, Irish Cream Porter, Fastidious Father Banana Peanut Butter Porter, Booze Mother Bourbon Barrel Aged Peanut Butter Porter, Stunt Dubbel Pumpkin Belgian Double, and their Mixed Berry Gose.

For eats, they’ll have The Return of the Mac food truck with gourmet macaroni and cheese, and The Lab Confectionery local bakery specializing in stroopwafels, Unicorn Cake, and freshly-baked goods. With live music, open mics, and pumpkin carving, there’s more than enough for everyone to have a blast throughout the day.

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing Company

Releasing tonight, Väsen Brewing Company has partnered up with Blue Sky Fund to drop their collab beer: Wanderlust 10. This Wanderlust recipe will give 10 percent of proceeds back to the Blue Sky Fund in honor of the #HikeForKids campaign, and this malty, dark chocolate-flavored beer doesn’t disappoint.

You’ll catch flavors of vanilla, German beechwood, and smoked malt together with the dessert flavors and cocoa nibs, plus real vanilla beans and a hint of smoke from the beechwood malts. As the brewery says, this beer “will have you pining for a crisp fall hike followed by an evening spent around the campfire” — and they have the first part covered!

They’re hosting a group hike this Saturday and enjoying this beer together afterward at the post-hike party at the brewery.

PHOTO: Three Notch’d RVA Collab House

This Friday at Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, head over for First Tap Friday, where the brewery is releasing their Throwing Back Blueberries Imperial Gose.

The beer is coming out along with Three Notch’d collab partners Throwing Back Sunday, an emo throwback cover band that’s also headlining the Nightmare on Emo Street Big Ass Halloween Party (another part of RVA Magazine’s HALLOWEEK!) at The Broadberry later Friday night.

PHOTO: Castleburg Brewery and Taproom

It’s Halloween at Castleburg Brewery and Taproom, as well! They’re hosting their 4th annual Halloween Party this Saturday with Cashmere Jungle Lords.

Unlike a lot of costume contest parties, this one will have more than one winner. Castleburg’s giving away cash prizes to contestants in all three categories of Scariest, Best Overall, and Best Couples costumes. Along with prizes, the brewery is hosting tons of great beer along with surf rock playing throughout the night.

That’s it for this week’s RVA On Tap! As your weekly columnist, I’m here to take all your beer releases, event info, ideas and questions. If you’re a brewer, send me your release info at [email protected], and if you’re a beer enthusiast, drop me a line anytime to talk booze. Catch y’all next week!

HALLOWEEK 2019: Seven Days of Halloween Madness For All

John Reinhold | October 22, 2019

Topics: costume, Costume contest, Ellwoods, festival, Halloweek, Halloweek 2019, Halloween, Halloween Parade, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, music, parade, The Broadberry, The Camel

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery & RVA Magazine’s HALLOWEEK is our week long celebration of all Halloween-inspired events, music, and parties in RVA. For over a decade now, we have celebrated one of our favorite holidays in Richmond — for an entire week, because Halloween’s too creative and fun a holiday to be confined to just one day. Since our first Halloweek over 10 years ago, it has grown to be one of our biggest event lineups each year, packed to the brim with events for all ages!

HALLOWEEK 2019 begins October 24th at Hardywood, and keeps going ’til the big Parade and Rooftop Party at Graduate Rooftop on Wednesday Oct. 31st! Hardywood has been an amazing supporter of RVA Magazine and partner in Halloweek for many years. Not only do they make amazing brews, they also provide multiple events for the whole family, to help make Halloweek truly special.

We kick off Halloweek this year on Thursday Oct 24th at Hardywood, with their Haunted Food Truck Court. Its family and dog friendly with great food trucks, music, games, a Red Vein Army selfie station, and a special new brew just for Halloweek. Make sure and pick up Hardywood’s Farmhouse Pumpkin around town and at our events, as our Official Halloweek Beer this year.

On Saturday Oct 26th, Beauvine Burger Concept’s Nightmare on Plum St. returns as a outdoor Halloween festival with some of the best bands in the area — including Sleepwalkers, Minor Poet, Holy Roller, Heartracer, and more! We will be hosting a cash costume contest at this event, during breaks between bands. Make sure and get your tickets, as this event is one you don’t want to miss out on.

New for 2019, we’ve started working with Red Vein Army, to provide a real haunting flavor for this year’s Halloweek. They will be at a few of our events giving out tickets to their big haunted attraction at Hanover Vegetable Farm. And in fact, we have something special for local people this year: Celebrate RVA Halloweek with Red Vein Haunted House! October 27th is officially RVA Magazine night at Red Vein, and you can save $4 on tickets with the code “RVAMAG“. Coupon good for tickets on 10/27 ONLY, so don’t miss out! Tickets available at Red Vein’s website: redveinhaunt.com.

Everything wraps up on Halloween night with the 14th annual Halloween Parade by All The Saints Theatre Company, followed by a big Rooftop Party at Graduate Richmond, for The Haunted Carnival Halloween Party!

Catch all the Halloweek action at our instagram, @rvamag, and be sure to use the hashtag #RVAhalloweek2019 for your own pics!

RVA On Tap: Halloweek, Harvest Festival, & Doggy-Beer Events

Caley Sturgill | October 24, 2018

Topics: ardent, Center of the Universe, Final Gravity, garden grove, Halloweek, Halloween, Hardywood, Isley, Legend, RVA On Tap, strangeways, The Answer

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing with news this week, from beer releases to festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town — so hold on to your mugs!

Last week, we saw some great beer releases and checked out the Scott’s Addition Booz Crawl, which is coming up this Saturday in Richmond’s booziest neighborhood. We also hit the books again as one of the country’s best beer cities (but we already knew that).

Haaaaallelujah, today is the first official day of this year’s Halloweek! That’s music to our ears at the magazine, because it’s our favorite week of the year. RVA Magazine partners up with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery once a year to bring Richmonders the city’s best in Halloween events, jam-packed with beer, bands, zombies, parties and more on every day leading up to the 31st.

Halloweek starts tonight(!!) at Hardywood’s Kick-Off party, with a Halloween FX Makeup workshop for all the overachievers out there, silent movie screenings of the best classics, and Thriller-mixed punk/horror garage jams — but the big fun comes on Saturday, when the brewery drops Trickery in an all-day party for the occasion.

Hardywood first introduced Trickery a few years back as the Halloween season’s go-to brew, and the “deliciously dark” stout has received great feedback every year since: it was even named one of HopCulture’s best beers in the country to drink this fall.

Trickery is all your Halloween dreams wrapped up in one. The 13.5% ABV imperial milk stout is aged in apple-brandy barrels for 8 months, and full of flavors like warm caramel, blackstrap molasses, and chocolate-covered cherries. It’ll be on tap at all three of Hardywood’s locations, and open to take home in to-go bottles if you can’t get enough.

PHOTO: Ardent Craft Ales

In more new booze news, Ardent is releasing their Fall American Sour Blend tomorrow at their Scott’s Addition spot, a copper-colored and medium-bodied blend of sour blonde and Brett IPA. This is one of those patience-is-a-virtue beers — the kind that gets better as it ages in your kitchen, while it gets harder and harder not to open it (and the kind that if you’re like me, ends up opened in a day). It’s dry, balanced, and the “funky characteristic” from Brettanomyces pairs with the oak barrels it’s aged in to bring this beer a light acidity to its taste.

PHOTO: The Answer

After the weekend, Halloweek continues when The Answer Brewpub teams up with the magazine and Hardywood Monday night to put on “Hallobeer,” an annual party at The Answer with music from The Mekong Express, and tracks from Earth, Wind, and Fire. There’ll be special brews on deck as well as costume contests for attendees, so remember what you learned at Hardywood’s FX Workshop and go win some prizes.

PHOTO: Final Gravity

Final Gravity drops a new IPA this Friday with so many Galaxy hops “you’ll feel like you’ve known it from another life.” Down the black hole of Astral Plane, you’ll find citrus, passionfruit, and peach bringing this ethereal IPA together. Give it a try at its release, or swing by the brewery on Sunday for Oktoberfest in Lakeside. They’ll also be dropping their seasonal Kingdoms Rise and serving up some serious sausages from Cafe Rustika, marinated in the Oktoberfest beer. Bless.

PHOTO: Center of the Universe Brewing

Hope you like dogs, because there are TWO beer and pup events coming up this weekend! Center of the Universe Brewing, one of my faves around town, is hosting Growl-O-Ween this Saturday. Grab your pooch, your costume, and your good-time shoes, they say, for a doggone good time (nice). They’ll have musical chairs, photobooths, bobbing for tennis balls (my heart!), and all the proceeds go back to the Friends of Hanover Dog Parks and the Hanover Humane Society. My beagle, Bagel (pre-Richmond famous Bagel), would be in heaven.

PHOTO: Strangeways Brewing

Strangeways is also celebrating the best animal in the world this year, with Barktoberfest this Saturday benefitting shelter and adoption groups like Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC), the Henrico Humane Society and more. The fur-filled fun day is also hosting a doggy costume contest, so if you’re not a dog person already, I suggest (strongly suggest) you make your way there and change your mind (or else). All extra donations go to Adopt RVA, which Strangeways said was “a natural fit,” because “Dogs and cats are like beer. It’s hard to choose just ONE,” and they certainly know their stuff — Strangeways has 36 beers on tap every day.

PHOTO: Legend Brewing Co.

Over at Legend Brewing Company, the Manchester Harvest Festival is right around the corner. The festival’s set for this Saturday, and has food trucks, costume contests (for both kids and adults) and good ol’ Americana music to really get that fall in Virginia feel. Legend has long-been our favorite place across the bridge, and the Harvest Festival is one of the best days of the year there. Make sure to come out and grab a fresh copy of the newest RVA Magazine in print, and wear your costume to get picked by our very own CEO, John Reinhold, who’s judging the contest at the event.

PHOTO: Isley Brewing

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ISLEY! The Scott’s Addition brewery turns 5 this Saturday, and they’ll have five birthday infusions on tap to celebrate: a Mango IPA, Orangegasmic porter, coffee-infused Stunt Dubbel, bourbon-aged Fastidious Father, and Boozy Mother. Boozy Mother sounds a little reminiscent of my future. They’ll also have the Bodillaz and Manchu food trucks out for the event, and wine pours from James River Cellars. Head down this weekend and buy yourself a birthday beer on their behalf.

PHOTO: Imbibe Festival

If you’re traveling soon, check out the Imbibe Beer & Arts Festival happening over two weekends in Fredericksburg and Virginia beach. Tons of breweries from around the state are coming out, including Richmond’s Ardent, Legend, Lickinghole Creek, and Strangeways. Some other Commonwealth brewers like Alewerks, Devil’s Backbone, and Starr Hill will make the trip from around the state, for an all-in-one Virginia faves fest with some of the best brews in the country.

PHOTO: Garden Grove

For all the coffee lovers out there, Garden Grove just teamed up with Bright Spot Coffee to make The Empress. It’s part-cold brew, part-beer, and the coffee-infused Robust Porter sounds like the perfect way to start the day fresh all over again in the evening. We’ve got some more coffee brews coming up soon from around town — there’s nothing better in your beer for this time of year. Can’t wait to give this one a try!

That’s it for this week’s RVA On Tap! As your new weekly columnist, I’m here to take all your beer releases, event info, ideas and questions. If you’re a brewer, send me your release info at [email protected], and if you’re a beer enthusiast, drop me a line anytime to talk booze. Catch y’all next week!
