#BaoBuns This Sushi Chophouse is a new one I’m just finding out about. It has two of my favorite things in one spot. It requires a visit for further exploration into the flavors that need to get in my belly.

I also could not help but add this very interesting dessert feature from them below. This is a pear dessert over chocolate that’s Gluten Free and looks amazing. Maybe a wee bit sexual, with the long stare here and all. But I will totally dive in and so lovingly enjoy it.

Keeping Richmond’s LGBTQ Gathering Places Alive

James Millner | April 20, 2020

Topics: Babe's of Carytown, Barcode, coronavirus, covid 19, Fallout, Godfrey's, LGBTQ bars, local restaurants, Thirsty's RVA, Triple X Divas

LGBTQ bars and restaurants are the lifeblood of our community culture here in Richmond, and the COVID-19 outbreak has placed a heavy strain on them all. Here’s how you can help make sure they stick around.

As we are all aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended the way restaurants and bars do business — if they’re even able to be open at all. Thousands of local establishments are closed completely for the foreseeable future. Others have reconfigured their business to provide take out, curbside pick-up, or delivery service. Doing so has required incredible creativity and tenacity, especially for our local LGBTQ establishments that don’t necessarily fit the mold of a traditional full-service restaurant.

While each establishment has taken a slightly different approach, their goals remain the same: stay open and provide as much support for their employees as possible.

We reached out to Barcode, Godfrey’s, Thirsty’s, Babes of Carytown, and Fallout RVA to find out what (and how) they’re doing, to let you know how you can still enjoy their food, drinks, and entertainment while providing them with much-needed support for their owners and staffs through these challenging times.

Barcode:

As of Friday, April 17, Barcode has suspended its take-out and delivery service. Manager Matt Butler wrote in a Facebook post:

“As of today – we had to stop doing our to-go and curbside. For everyone that tried to order – through the site – or pick up a gift card – or jumped in to help us fix our window… from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. We’re gonna do our very best to weather this storm and hopefully will be able to resume service as soon as some of the restrictions placed on restaurants and bars are lifted/lessened. My heart is a little heavy today knowing that I won’t be able to do what I love and be there for you guys for a while. Looking forward to when this is all done and over with.”

You can still support Barcode’s employees by donating to its relief fund:

Godfrey’s:

Godfrey’s has turned its world-famous Drag Brunch into a virtual experience, complete with brunch food and mimosas to go. They’ve recently expanded to include a late-night take-out menu on Wednesdays during the Godfrey’s Angels live online drag show. Owner Brian Thomas says that viewership is consistently good and that some aspects of the new virtual drag experiences may last beyond the COVID-19 quarantine.

Godfrey’s pick-up menu: Godfreysrva.com

Hours: Late-night bar menu Wednesday 7:00 -10:00 pm; Sunday Brunch menu 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Phone-in orders only: 804-648-3957

Godfrey’s Employee Relief Fund: gofundme.com/f/save-godfrey039s-richmond-virginia

Thirsty’s:

Thirsty’s offers its Cajun-inspired fare for take-out, including daily specials that pair food with adult beverages for one low price. Beer, wine and cocktails are also available for pick-up. Owner Keyan Herron says that delivery may become an option soon. Check out Thirsty’s Facebook and Instagram for details.

Take-out menu: Thirstysrva.com

Hours:  Daily 3:00 pm-10:00 pm

Phone-in orders:  804-918-3080

Fallout RVA:

Fallout owner Jackie Bishop Wells says the last month or so has been the most challenging ever for her, professionally and personally. Her primary goal has been to revamp her business model so that the business can survive and to support her team, which she considers family, as much as possible. She’s also using this time to do maintenance projects on the club.

Fallout is offering carryout, curbside pick-up and delivery of food, beer, cider, seltzer, mead and wine. They’ll also fill growlers up to 64 ounces, if you supply the growler. Fallout merchandise, including rope and paddles, is also available for sale through an online store. They even have rolls of toilet paper for sale!

Jackie says that Fallout, known for its entertainment, will soon be streaming shows, including DJs, drag shows and concerts. All proceeds from online shows will go to support performers and artists.

Pick-up and delivery menu: falloutrva.com

Hours:  Monday-Saturday 5:00 pm-11:00 pm;  Sunday 11:00 am-11:00 pm

Online ordering: falloutrva.com

Phone orders 804-343-3688 (starting at 6:00 pm)

Online merchandise store: fallout-rva.myshopify.com

Fallout Support Fund: gofundme.com/f/keep-fallout-running

Fallout has also launched a subscription-based Patreon that gives subscribers access to exclusive content and entertainment. Prices range from $2-$10 a month. Revenue will go to supporting the business and its employees. patreon.com/falloutrva

Babes of Carytown:

Babes of Carytown isn’t offering take-out or delivery options, but the Triple X Divas host an online livestream drag show every Thursday night at 8:00. The shows last about an hour and include some of your favorite divas, hosted by Babe’s entertainment director, Michelle Livigne. There’s a question and answer session at the end of every show.

You can find the shows on the Babes of Carytown Facebook page. Information on how to tip the performers is posted in the live feed.

Babe’s of Carytown GoFundMe: gofundme.com/f/babes-tip-jar

The time will come again when we can all gather to eat, drink, dance, and drag. In the meantime, please consider supporting these establishments that are so important to our community. They’ve always been there for us; now it’s time for us to be there for them.

The current situation may be tough on local business, but many restaurants in Richmond are opening up options for delivery and pickup orders to help get past the worst weeks of this pandemic. Here’s how you can help, while scoring delicious eats in the process!

While people are purchasing mass quantities of toilet paper, baby wipes, and frozen chicken, it can be tempting to lock yourself in your house and make meals with what you already have. But when you’re craving your favorite local dishes, restaurants in Richmond have a safe way to bring them to you: with pick-up and delivery, it’s still possible to enjoy the city’s best dining without the worry. Now more than ever, it’s time to support our local businesses however we can.

We’ve gathered a list of Richmond restaurants that are open for business with new takeout and delivery options during the COVID-19 pandemic. Listings will be updated as more information becomes available. In addition to using these safe avenues to support local business, many locals are also purchasing gift cards to help restaurants through the closures. It’s a great way to show your support now — and still be able to go out to eat when life calms down. Many included have shortened their operating hours, so be sure to order within their updated time frames for pick-up and delivery.

Check out your favorites here, and if you’re a local restaurant owner, reach out to us at [email protected] to have your spot added below.

Ipanema Is Here To Stay

Under new ownership by Seth Campbell, Richmond’s long-beloved Ipanema Cafe will remain a staple of Grace St. and maintain its culture.

You may already know that Ipanema recently acquired Seth Campbell as its new owner, but you probably didn’t know that Campbell’s dedication to the full-service vegetarian/vegan café entitles a daily 70-minute drive just to get there. He’s been spending a lot of time on the road lately.

The New Jersey native graduated from the University of Virginia in the spring of 2019, and still currently resides in Charlottesville with his dogs, Tio, Bear, and Loki. He’s looking forward to moving to Richmond this summer.

Campbell has built his experience within the industry since he was 19, as a college student juggling different positions as a bouncer, food-runner, barback, and eventually a bartender.

“I love a good challenge, and I love the responsibility that comes with it,” said Campbell.

His education and experience, blended together with his competitive drive, make him eager to further diversify the crowd of existing customers. “Ipanema means so much to Richmond because it’s a mainstay, and a staple of Grace St.,” said Campbell. With more than 20 years in business, Campbell is adamant about maintaining the culture of Ipanema as the café’s regulars know it.

What kind of culture does Ipanema embody? Campbell would tell you that it’s first and foremost a loving place, because its friends and customers feel like family. When you walk down the few front steps into the café, it immediately gives you a homey feeling. It’s a cozy place, whether you’re inside a booth or out on the patio.

He emphasizes that it’s a fun place to be, especially on Wednesdays for the locally-loved karaoke night. Best of all, Campbell describes Ipanema as a place that has formed a community around being accepting of everyone that walks through its doors.

No matter how much Grace St. has changed over the years, Campbell is motivated to grow Ipanema in the tradition it has established, even with crowds that aren’t solely vegan or vegetarian. And while he doesn’t fall on either side of the vegan- or meat-lover groups, he does love Ipanema’s Beyond Burger and sweet potato fries, paired with their harissa mayo.

To grab a plate of your own, the café is open for lunch and dinner, and newcomers can find them at 917 W. Grace St. Find Ipanema here on Instagram and Facebook.

Food-Delivery Apps Give Local Restaurants A New Way To Compete With The Big Boys

Caitlin Morris | January 31, 2019

Topics: EatStreet, food delivery apps, Grubhub, local restaurants, Strawberry Street Cafe, Uber Eats

When you look up burgers on a food delivery app, you will come across familiar names like McDonalds and T.GI.Fridays, but you’re also going to find many of the smaller Richmond staples, like Carytown Burgers and Fries, and Shockoe Bottom’s Bottom Burger. A search for tacos might show you Taco Bell, but you’ll also find Broad Street’s Asado, the Richmond home of the double-smoked bacon and chicken taco.

While smaller independently owned restaurants are making a name for themselves with great menu items, food delivery services like Uber Eats, GrubHub, and EatStreet are helping these restaurants reach wider customer bases.

“We definitely benefit by being able to reach more customers,” said Timmy Peele, a manager at Strawberry Street Cafe in the Fan. “As well as make having more revenue.”

Most web-based delivery services give restaurants options for the delivery process. The service can act solely as an online ordering tool, with the restaurant using their own staff for deliveries, or the delivery service can provide drivers for pick-up and delivery.

For smaller restaurants, external delivery drivers help keep restaurant staff to smaller numbers.

“It’s pretty easy to keep one person in the kitchen and have those (deliveries) running the whole time,” Peele said. Many restaurants also subscribe to multiple services, working towards making their food as accessible as possible.

“We use EatStreet and GrubHub,” Peele said. “We did use Uber Eats before the ownership changed, and I think we’re planning on getting it back.”

Peele, who has been with Strawberry Street Cafe for eight years and three ownerships, has the rise of the market for web-based delivery services.

“I was here before it started,” Peele said. “It came at a point where the restaurant really needed a boost.”
