Dungeons & Dragons is No Longer the Strangest Thing

Ash Griffith | November 8, 2018

Topics: Coalition Theater, D&D, dungeons and dragons, Garden Grove Brewing, one eyed jacques, strangeways

Dragons, Orcs, and Pabst Blue Ribbons, oh my. Dungeons & Dragons is having one hell of a resurgence lately in the River City. From game nights at local breweries, to live shows at comedy theaters, to your coworker organizing a campaign at his gross apartment, the iconic tabletop game — and cornerstone of nerd culture — is making its way back into the pop-culture lexicon at full force.

First published in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most well known role-playing games of all time. Players follow and create different worlds and missions while a Dungeon Master serves as the overall referee — and usually the winner of a role no one ever wants.

The past two years have been the biggest years for the franchise since its heyday in the 1970’s and 80’s. Netflix’s Stranger Things has featured the game at the forefront of its series, and usually plays a pivotal role in the story line. Other franchises such as the Dan Harmon’s Community, and The McElroy Brothers’ The Adventure Zone also have brought the game into the pop culture lexicon in recent years in their own way.

Specifically in 2017, it is estimated that over 8.6 million people played Dungeons & Dragons, and over 9 million people streamed games on Twitch. Joe Manganiello (best known as Alcide on True Blood, and most recently as Deathstroke in the DC Universe) has been a long time fan and avid player of D&D. Manganiello appeared in a live stream and was an understandable boost to viewership.

“In 2017 alone, we had more than 7,500 unique broadcasters streaming live play D&D, for more than 475 million minutes watched over the course of the entire year,” Greg Tito, Senior Communications Manager for D&D, told SyFy.com in an interview. “It’s been super popular on streaming, and I think that is a big contributor to the surge in success of D&D and why it’s so present in the public sphere.”

Ever the epicenter of what is cool and hip(ster), Richmond has a plethora of options for both the seasoned and novice D&D player in the room. Richmond’s main gaming hub, One Eyed Jacques, is situated pretty comfortably on W. Cary St. One Eyed Jacques not only has some of the most knowledgeable tabletop gamers in town, but also offers various nights every month — to either learn the game from seasoned players, or just bring your own team into their house to play.

“But Ash! What if I want a nice, hearty IPA while I burn an ogre’s Trader Joe’s to the ground?” Oh, sweet, sweet reader, trust and believe that I’ve got you covered for that as well. While One Eyed Jacques might frown on you bringing a six pack into their establishment, a good handful of breweries and bars have started housing their own D&D nights in town.

Amongst these is Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery who hosts their own D&D night every other Tuesday night, and encourage anyone curious in learning the game to come.

After realizing that a bunch of the folks at Garden Grove already play and love D&D, the desire to want to bring a game night to the brewery only felt natural. After seeing that Strangeways hosted their own night, Chris Sarnoski reached out to Goblins and Growlers (who host the game) to see if they could do the same for them.

“We always thought that was really cool, that whole community aspect of  folks coming out to play games whether alone or with other people,” said Sarnoski. “We wanted to see if we could take something we were passionate about outside of Garden Grove and do more there.”

Much like other folks in the area who play D&D or who host the nights, Sarnoski has always enjoyed it even if he hasn’t always kept up with it the entire time. So why does he love it so much? Pretty much for the same reasons we all do, just stated a bit more eloquently, honestly.

“It’s kind of like a theater of the mind based role playing game,” said Sarnoski. I love playing video games at home, but it’s really a good chance to write your own story or develop your own character and see what they’re about. It always gives me a chance to disconnect from the daily stress of work and have fun playing and developing a different character.”

Even though it’s hard to ignore that Richmond does tend to hop on any trend involving decompressing and relaxing, especially in ways that remind us of simpler times, it’s still a valid question. Why D&D in Richmond, and why now?

“With a lot of the games I’ve seen pop up in Richmond, they’re low-commitment based opportunities,” said Sarnoski. “They’re drop in, drop out style games. You can show up this week and then miss the next two weeks, and it’s totally okay — whereas a lot of the private style games, if you miss one week, you’re not playing the game anymore. I think we’re a fairly young city, and gaming is definitely a big aspect of this generation for the most part; at least for all the circles I travel through.”

For those who want to get engaged without playing, or kind of just want to watch a game for a mini crash-course? Coalition Theater has your back, and hopefully you even laugh in the process.

Hosted by Adam Stackhouse, The Coalition Theater is home to a series of periodic Dungeons and Dragons live shows called “Roll 4…” and based off of a particular theme. Roll 4 Brunch, Roll 4 Blast Off, and most recently Roll 4 Treats as part of the Nightmare on Broad Street Halloween Series. You get the picture.

Originally started three years ago, after branching off of a Richmond Famous show (where they usually bring in someone well known in the community and then do improv.), the idea to do a live D&D game came at a natural time. After doing a Richmond Famous show with lawyer Peter Trauernicht, who is a Dungeon Master by night, the time felt right.

“It filled a 10pm slot, but [doing a live D&D show] was something we had also been kicking around, because Dungeons & Dragons unsurprisingly intersects very nicely with elements of improv,” said Stackhouse. “Perhaps two of the nerdiest things in town. Roleplaying, character acting, decision making, and play — I mean, to speak very generically, there are elements of that game that speak to real time comedy.  Playing live, there’s a nice sweet spot between those two things.”

Unsurprisingly, when I asked Adam why he loved D&D so much, he described what also happens to be why people who do improv tend to love doing it as well.

“I think what I like best about it is the room for creativity and collaborative storytelling,” said Stackhouse. “Which is not something you get out of your Scrabbles and your Pictionaries — and that’s not even the core of it. The core of it is making actual adventures with friends, and it’s often funny, and surprising, and it can be dramatic. It allows people to experiment and dive into personalities and ideas that you just can’t in any other form of game or play.”

Naturally, some of the stigma with Dungeons is usually that it’s either difficult to play, or that it is hard to find a group. Neither of these are the case, but it’s understandable to assume. Stackhouse had some advice for folks looking to play.

“That’s the tricky part,” said Stackhouse. “The best experience you can get is find someone who has led up games before and find a DM, and have them lead you into your first game. Like any project, it’s the kind of thing where if you announce it. If you’re really into it and it’s accessible to learn yourself, the starter kits first edition is very good for anyone who has never played before. You can always go to One Eyed Jacques or Battlegrounds.”

So grab your die, grab your dungeon maps and books, grab your snacks of choice, and sling a roll for friendship: because that’s what’s going to happen once you find your new group. As we head into the coldest months of the year, and probably a blizzard or twelve (go global warming!), now is the time to head to your spot of choice and learn just what kind of mage you were truly meant to be. Game on, Richmond.

RVA ON TAP: Winter Brews, 90’s Video Games, Axe-Throwing & Juicy IPAs

Caley Sturgill | November 7, 2018

Topics: ardent, Final Gravity, Hardywood, intermission beer, kindred spirit, Lickinghole Creek, midnight brewery, strangeways, The Answer

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed last week’s column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing with news this week, from beer releases to festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town — so hold on to your mugs!

Last time we caught up was on Halloween, and even though it’s only been a few days, the holiday season is already upon us (apparently). I’m not ready to let go of fall anytime soon, but three cheers for holiday beers! At least the year’s best month coming to an end means its best eats are on their way.

PHOTO: Midnight Brewery

In new-brew-news, Midnight Brewery skipped Thanksgiving and went straight to the big one: Christmas At Midnight returns this Saturday, ringing in the season at their Rockville spot. The English mild ale is packed with winter’s best Christmas spices, and tastes a lot like “a liquid Snickerdoodle in a cup.”

Getting so bored in the woods that you start throwing axes at stumps: few things are so unapologetically southern. This rural tradition is one of the South’s best, in my humble opinion — and if you’re looking to try your hand at it, head out to Midnight Brewery tonight in Goochland to jump in on their axe-throwing night. It’s harder than it looks.

The event is 21+, which is probably a good thing, as long as you get your slinging-heavy-weapons fix in before your beers. Halloween might be over, but the scare of axes rebounding at crowds post-beer is very real in these games (been there, trust).

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

I hit up Hardywood again this week and fell for White Out all over again, but the new-news from the brewery is their Bourbon and Port Barrel Gingerbread Stout release this Saturday.

Gingerbread Stout is “freagin’ Christmas in a bottle,” according to BeerAdvocate. The imperial milk stout is drool-worthy like several of last week’s brews, and it’s made with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger, and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Mmmmmm. This one matures in Virginia bourbon barrels with oak, caramel, and bourbon undertones, for a rich, chocolately stout that “warms the palate and the soul.” I….need it.

The stout is available aged in bourbon or port barrels, and available at both locations. If you’re looking to hit the downtown spot on Friday, you can also check out their #freshcanfriday release of Citraweisse, a Hefeweizen ale dry-hopped with Citra hops.

PHOTO: The Answer Brewpub

Calling all gamers: The Answer Brewpub gets it. Chasing Rings dropped this Sunday, and the 90’s-Sonic homage features “Golden Promise in the grain bill” for deep, golden-ring hues. Its Supersonic amounts (nice) of tropical aromas are made to burst out of the excessively dry-hopped pour, according to its brewers. The Answer is famous for its glasses, and this is one worth getting: especially with this 100% Mosaic DIPA from one of Richmond’s favorite spots to fill it.

PHOTO: Final Gravity Brewing Co.

Speaking of games, Final Gravity Brewing Co. is bringing back their game-themed Asteroids double IPA this week. On Friday, swing by Lakeside to give it a try for the release. This one will “send you into hyperspace,” with a triple-hit of hops and crowlers for the high score. Its Columbus, Mosaic, and Citra hops are full of stone fruits, florals, and citrus tones to bring this IPA full-circle (and full-flavor). Yum!

PHOTO: Ardent Craft Ales

Over at Ardent, Dark Rye is returning tomorrow. The American imperial stout is 9.8%, and balances its rye spiciness with roasted notes for a deep black stout with a long-lasting tan head. It’s full bodied with a chocolatey finish, and you can try it out with a side (or three) of Continental Divide tacos in Ardent’s beer garden during the release. Reviewers have noted this one is “pretty dang black” with a nice, subtle aroma of malt, chocolate, hops, and rye — and a hint of licorice and espresso. Dark Rye is on draft and comes in 4-packs of bottles, so you can drink it as you please.

PHOTO: Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery

Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery has been working on their Juicy IPA series for a while now, and this Friday marks number 7 in the bunch. Something Loyal is their newest addition on the farm, with a Huell-Melon hop profile. The release is this Friday, with the Sandtopia food truck to accompany the new brew. Past releases include Something Better, Something Royal, Something Sneaky and more, and tasters have sung the praises of most beers in this series.

PHOTO: Intermission Beer Company

If you’re down with The Answer Brewpub’s Chasing Rings gamer-beer, but you didn’t master Sonic in the 90’s, Intermission Beer Co.’s got you covered. The Glen Allen Brewery has board games every Sunday now for us analog-gamers (I’m right there with you), and you can bring your own game or try something new when you get there. No friends needed: Intermission will provide them. Or bring your own of those, too. It’s fine either way. Old friends are the best friends, but new friends also rule. You can never have too many!

Also at Intermission this Friday is Stitch & Bitch, in case you need to vent about your life and want to get creative with it. Every two weeks, you can bring your projects and your woes for Hooks & Hops at the brewery along with your appetite for some delicious beer. Between board games, crafting, and trivia, Intermission is killing it at the fun-game lately.

PHOTO: Strangeways Brewing

Along with Gourd of Thunder came Crystalis at Strangeways Brewing Co., and a big congrats to their Fredericksburg head brewer, Brian, because it’s his first official personalized release. This classic American IPA is packed with citrus, pine, dank earth, and subtle floral notes to pull it together with a spicy, earthy flavor. Crystalis is primarily hopped with Columbus, and has supporting tones from Citra and Centennial hops as well. The 7.2% IPA is great for anytime — so drink up!

Strangeways also has a few exciting events coming up next week, so stay tuned for our next go-around for some awesome news.

PHOTO: Kindred Spirits Brewing

For everyone feeling generous (btw it’s the holidays, so you should be), head to Kindred Spirit and join in on their goal: to feed 300+ families this year for Thanksgiving. The West End spot is partnering up with Goochland Cares this year to do their part, and it’s a great way to do yours, too. There are plenty of ways to get involved in the Richmond community with so many locals involved, and Kindred Spirit wants to make it easy (and tasty).

That’s it for this week’s RVA On Tap! As your new weekly columnist, I’m here to take all your beer releases, event info, ideas and questions. If you’re a brewer, send me your release info at [email protected], and if you’re a beer enthusiast, drop me a line anytime to talk booze. Catch y’all next week!

RVA ON TAP: Heavy Metal Pumpkins, Big Lebowski Bar Crawl, & New Fall Brews This Weekend

Caley Sturgill | October 31, 2018

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing with news this week, from beer releases to festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town — so hold on to your mugs!

IT’S HALLOWEEN! Hallelujah! It’s Lucky Number 13 for the Richmond Halloween Parade, which is going down in Oregon Hill tonight. Meet up in Monroe Park at 7, and bring your puppets, bring your props, dress to impress: the citizens are the parade for this RVA Halloween tradition. Once you’re done at the parade, the city’s got a ton of great beer releases, bar crawls, and events to keep your juices flowing through the week and say hello to November.

PHOTO: Strangeways

Does playing music at plants really affect how they grow? Does blasting metal at pumpkins change how they taste? Strangeways set out to find the answer. Porter season is the best season, and these guys know it. This Saturday, Gourd of Thunder returns, made with freshly-picked local pumpkins that were ripened on the vine “while continuously listening to heavy metal.” It was created to cataclysmically blow your mind with its face-melting, high-voltage attitude (not unlike myself as a kid, S/O to my mother for her troubles).

This malty-pumpkin fuses with a milky sugar creaminess, packed with bourbon vanilla beans to drive the cinnamon, ginger, and clove spices right through your skull (sweet!) and aged in oak barrels. Headbangers Unite!

PHOTO: Carytown Bathrobe Bar Crawl

My fav is back, and there’s a whole bar crawl to drink it at! “Pull out that bathrobe grandma gave you last Christmas, and strut your stuff in Carytown” for the Big LeBYRDski Fest in honor of 1998’s best movie. Grab a Center of the Universe (COTU) El Duderino, the famous White Russian milk stout (yum!), featured at this weekend’s Carytown Bathrobe Bar Crawl because “It’s how the Dude would want you to roll.” The crawl hits Citizen Burger Bar, Burger Bach, NY deli, Mellow Mushroom, and RVA Draft Room, and it’s topped off at the end with a showing of The Big Lebowski at the Byrd Theatre. I can’t imagine a more perfect day.

PHOTO: Center of the Universe

Speaking of COTU, a brand-new brew is on its way from the Ashland spot this Saturday for the Donny Coffee Brown Ale release. This whole week is full of brews right up my alley, and Donny doesn’t disappoint. This Southern-English style brown is brewed with Lamplighter Coffee’s cold brew, and its smooth, velvety flavor is topped off with toffee and caramelized sugar notes. COTU says it’ll remind you of carefree coffee dates with your closest nihilist buddies — truly a pastime at Lamplighter. Donny is brewed with Maris Otter, Crystal 120, Crystal 77, Flaked Barley and Flaked Oats, and balanced with Perle hops and Richmond’s favorite coffee company.

PHOTO: Castleburg Brewing

Is everyone this into fall beers, or is it just me? Here’s another drool-worthy brew this week, Castleburg’s mOatmeal Stout. For a stout, it’s light, creamy, and pretty low in ABV — at 5.5%, it’s suitable anytime and sounds like an English dream. Dark, rich, malty, and full of chocolate, coffee, and fruit. This stout is brewed with Cascade and Willamette hops, dark roasted malts, and traditional English yeast to round it out, according to the brewers. It’s also gluten-reduced, so all of you watching your waistlines can enjoy it before America eats its weight in food for good ol’ Thanksgiving tradition a few weeks from now.

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing

Vasen is ahead of the winter game, with a full-on Stout Month called Walrus Series. The heavy beers are certainly comparable to this monster of the animal kingdom, and they’re paired at Vasen with Intergalactic Tacos and trivia from Geeks Who Drink for the release party tomorrow night. These beers come in four varieties: the Wired Walrus, the Imperial Walrus, the Whiskery Walrus, and the Sour Cherry Walrus. Vasen’s also partnered with Mustaches for Kids Richmond, and brewed a special Cancer Gose Bye Bye with the organization. The benefit-collab beer will also be on tap tomorrow evening, and the brewery is donating 20 percent of its sales to the nonprofit: so go drink for a good cause!

PHOTO: Ardent

Everyone’s favorite south Robinson Street spot paired up with Ardent to come up with the Barrel Aged Defenestrator. The Cask had a hand in this doppelbock-collab, which is lagered for 10 months in bourbon barrels. Its 10.4% ABV has the same malty base and stone fruit as the beer’s original version, but with some extra bourbon and oaky flavor, according to the brewers. Come out to The Cask Thursday night to give it a try with The German Snack Shack on-deck.

PHOTO: The Veil Brewing Co.

Never Dead returned at The Veil Brewing Co. last night, so get ‘em while they’re hot (cold)! This All Hallow’s Gose Ale with sour candy has “Pillowcase after pillowcase of Sour Patch Kids and Sour Gummy Worms.” Its brewers say it tastes like a sugar-filled night of mischief and mayhem, and we all know The Veil’s best brews don’t last long — so swing by while they’ve got them. You can also buy this one in cases, and there’s a one-case or six 4-packs per person limit on purchase (so if you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t expect to go snatching them all up from the rest of us).

PHOTO: Triple Crossing Covenant Beer Fest

Triple Crossing is opening its doors once again for its ⟁Covenant Beer Fest⟁ in Fulton. The brewery is hosting 19 world-class brewers and separate can release event the night before on Friday. At the festival, the entire Fulton Brewpub will be open and tickets can be purchased beer-by-beer during the event.

⟁At Friday’s Covenant release, all the triangle variants have increased hops. Interstellar returns in addition to Falcon Smash coming out of hibernation in 16oz cans. Next up is Galaxy Triangles, a 6% IPA brewed with flaked wheat, flaked oats, and malted wheat — on top of crushed pineapple tropical passion fruit and threaded into the house ale’s trademark citrus. Galaxy Triangles has a softer-than-10-ply plushiness. Light that Never Goes Out is the fourth release, and the golden sour has a refreshing tart acidity along with its deep fruit tones. According to the brewers, it’s “just as easily consuming all the attention in the room, and then forgotten about when shared with good company.” This Light is well-done among friends. The final can release of the night comes with Nectar and Knife, which has a bright, grapefruit-pulpy zest softness brewed with “Simcoe and her daughter Mosaic.”⟁

PHOTO: Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine

Richmond’s on the national beer map for being awesome again. Feels like every week we win something new: Congrats to The Answer Brewpub for being that marker this time around, hitting the list for Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine’s Best 18 Beers of 2018. The Answer’s 3 Scoops is one of the brewery’s “in-your-face sour” fruit beers that push the legal limits of fruit content, and according to Beer and Brewing, the intensity of flavor is undeniable. The magazine noted that for brewers in 2018, it’s been hard to talk beer without a conversation about using unfermented fruit: a conversation, they say, that was primarily started by The Answer — “so unapologetic in their approach that they’ve even designed ticking time bomb labels to stress the meaning of ‘drink fresh, keep cold.’”

3 Scoops is a fruit smoothie beer with a daiquiri consistency, and comes in flavors like Passionfruit/Lemonade/Mango and Raspberry/Strawberry/Rhubarb. With these fruit blends, The Answer has “expanded the idea of what beer can be” to Beer and Brewing Magazine.

PHOTO: Novemberfest

If you’re traveling this weekend, be sure to hit up Novemberfest in NOVA. The Alexandria event features a ton of Virginia brewers, with RVA favorites like Ardent, Blue Bee Cider, Final Gravity, Hardywood, The Answer, Triple Crossing, Väsen, and The Veil — plus a bunch of other great ones throughout the state. The outdoor block party has more than 80 local beers and ciders total and sounds like a blast, so check it out if you make your way up north.

RVA On Tap: Halloweek, Harvest Festival, & Doggy-Beer Events

Caley Sturgill | October 24, 2018

Topics: ardent, Center of the Universe, Final Gravity, garden grove, Halloweek, Halloween, Hardywood, Isley, Legend, RVA On Tap, strangeways, The Answer

Last week, we saw some great beer releases and checked out the Scott’s Addition Booz Crawl, which is coming up this Saturday in Richmond’s booziest neighborhood. We also hit the books again as one of the country’s best beer cities (but we already knew that).

Haaaaallelujah, today is the first official day of this year’s Halloweek! That’s music to our ears at the magazine, because it’s our favorite week of the year. RVA Magazine partners up with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery once a year to bring Richmonders the city’s best in Halloween events, jam-packed with beer, bands, zombies, parties and more on every day leading up to the 31st.

Halloweek starts tonight(!!) at Hardywood’s Kick-Off party, with a Halloween FX Makeup workshop for all the overachievers out there, silent movie screenings of the best classics, and Thriller-mixed punk/horror garage jams — but the big fun comes on Saturday, when the brewery drops Trickery in an all-day party for the occasion.

Hardywood first introduced Trickery a few years back as the Halloween season’s go-to brew, and the “deliciously dark” stout has received great feedback every year since: it was even named one of HopCulture’s best beers in the country to drink this fall.

Trickery is all your Halloween dreams wrapped up in one. The 13.5% ABV imperial milk stout is aged in apple-brandy barrels for 8 months, and full of flavors like warm caramel, blackstrap molasses, and chocolate-covered cherries. It’ll be on tap at all three of Hardywood’s locations, and open to take home in to-go bottles if you can’t get enough.

PHOTO: Ardent Craft Ales

In more new booze news, Ardent is releasing their Fall American Sour Blend tomorrow at their Scott’s Addition spot, a copper-colored and medium-bodied blend of sour blonde and Brett IPA. This is one of those patience-is-a-virtue beers — the kind that gets better as it ages in your kitchen, while it gets harder and harder not to open it (and the kind that if you’re like me, ends up opened in a day). It’s dry, balanced, and the “funky characteristic” from Brettanomyces pairs with the oak barrels it’s aged in to bring this beer a light acidity to its taste.

PHOTO: The Answer

After the weekend, Halloweek continues when The Answer Brewpub teams up with the magazine and Hardywood Monday night to put on “Hallobeer,” an annual party at The Answer with music from The Mekong Express, and tracks from Earth, Wind, and Fire. There’ll be special brews on deck as well as costume contests for attendees, so remember what you learned at Hardywood’s FX Workshop and go win some prizes.

PHOTO: Final Gravity

Final Gravity drops a new IPA this Friday with so many Galaxy hops “you’ll feel like you’ve known it from another life.” Down the black hole of Astral Plane, you’ll find citrus, passionfruit, and peach bringing this ethereal IPA together. Give it a try at its release, or swing by the brewery on Sunday for Oktoberfest in Lakeside. They’ll also be dropping their seasonal Kingdoms Rise and serving up some serious sausages from Cafe Rustika, marinated in the Oktoberfest beer. Bless.

PHOTO: Center of the Universe Brewing

Hope you like dogs, because there are TWO beer and pup events coming up this weekend! Center of the Universe Brewing, one of my faves around town, is hosting Growl-O-Ween this Saturday. Grab your pooch, your costume, and your good-time shoes, they say, for a doggone good time (nice). They’ll have musical chairs, photobooths, bobbing for tennis balls (my heart!), and all the proceeds go back to the Friends of Hanover Dog Parks and the Hanover Humane Society. My beagle, Bagel (pre-Richmond famous Bagel), would be in heaven.

PHOTO: Strangeways Brewing

Strangeways is also celebrating the best animal in the world this year, with Barktoberfest this Saturday benefitting shelter and adoption groups like Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC), the Henrico Humane Society and more. The fur-filled fun day is also hosting a doggy costume contest, so if you’re not a dog person already, I suggest (strongly suggest) you make your way there and change your mind (or else). All extra donations go to Adopt RVA, which Strangeways said was “a natural fit,” because “Dogs and cats are like beer. It’s hard to choose just ONE,” and they certainly know their stuff — Strangeways has 36 beers on tap every day.

PHOTO: Legend Brewing Co.

Over at Legend Brewing Company, the Manchester Harvest Festival is right around the corner. The festival’s set for this Saturday, and has food trucks, costume contests (for both kids and adults) and good ol’ Americana music to really get that fall in Virginia feel. Legend has long-been our favorite place across the bridge, and the Harvest Festival is one of the best days of the year there. Make sure to come out and grab a fresh copy of the newest RVA Magazine in print, and wear your costume to get picked by our very own CEO, John Reinhold, who’s judging the contest at the event.

PHOTO: Isley Brewing

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ISLEY! The Scott’s Addition brewery turns 5 this Saturday, and they’ll have five birthday infusions on tap to celebrate: a Mango IPA, Orangegasmic porter, coffee-infused Stunt Dubbel, bourbon-aged Fastidious Father, and Boozy Mother. Boozy Mother sounds a little reminiscent of my future. They’ll also have the Bodillaz and Manchu food trucks out for the event, and wine pours from James River Cellars. Head down this weekend and buy yourself a birthday beer on their behalf.

PHOTO: Imbibe Festival

If you’re traveling soon, check out the Imbibe Beer & Arts Festival happening over two weekends in Fredericksburg and Virginia beach. Tons of breweries from around the state are coming out, including Richmond’s Ardent, Legend, Lickinghole Creek, and Strangeways. Some other Commonwealth brewers like Alewerks, Devil’s Backbone, and Starr Hill will make the trip from around the state, for an all-in-one Virginia faves fest with some of the best brews in the country.

PHOTO: Garden Grove

For all the coffee lovers out there, Garden Grove just teamed up with Bright Spot Coffee to make The Empress. It’s part-cold brew, part-beer, and the coffee-infused Robust Porter sounds like the perfect way to start the day fresh all over again in the evening. We’ve got some more coffee brews coming up soon from around town — there’s nothing better in your beer for this time of year. Can’t wait to give this one a try!
