“Woodman, Spare That Tree!”
“Woodman, Spare That Tree!”
That’s the name of a petition launched recently by locals in an effort to save a beloved oak tree that sits at the intersections of Broad and Adams streets and Brook Road and is in danger of possibly being cut down to erect a statue of Maggie Walker.
The petition, which you can view here, calls on the Planning Commission and Richmond City Council to spare the tree. The city announced plans for a monument for Walker in October which they hoped to have completed by next fall.
Despite these plans for a Maggie Walker monument, Mayor Dwight Jones signed off on the petition according to the Richmond Times Dispatch on Thursday.
As of Friday afternoon, the petition had 1,321 signatures.
