It’s been in the works for a bit, but those who follow the local, independent film collective Good Day RVA, they’ve been waiting in anticipation for this release.

Filmed in Charlottesville’s IX Art Park, My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel croons his way through his new track “4th of July” surrounded by gnarled branches and flowers. The song is off his third solo album, 4th of July, released in late August ahead of a fall solo tour (which includes Central-VA dates).

Check out the video below:

“We’re excited to expand Good Day’s reach with our Guest Sessions series,” said Will Weaver, Good Day RVA co-founder. “Like our other live music videos, we saw an opportunity to film an artist that we love in a unique location – the concept and people all came together to make it happen. By expanding our audience with this new series, it will draw even more attention to our thriving local music scene in Richmond.”

Weaver reached out to Broemel after discovering the guitarist’s solo project and tour stop in Charlottesville. He reached out to his label, Stocks in Asia/Thirty Tigers, showed off Good Day RVA’s work, and offered to shoot a video of the performer when he was in town. Sure enough, they agreed and Weaver set out scouting locations.

“They were gracious in hosting us and their mission to promote art and community events is something that resonates with Good Day RVA,” Weaver said of the folks at IX Art Park.

Per usual for Good Day, filming involved multiple cameras and volunteers over one day of shooting. The track’s length, coming in over 12 minutes, was a new test for the band whose previous longest video was a few tracks from Navi released back in March 2015.

This was the first shoot to not incorporate the collective’s trademark use of 8 mm film – they were given a strict deadline and processing the old film type can be time consuming.

“It speaks to our hive mind getting better as editors,” said Chris Damon, another founder of Good Day RVA. “We can hit a deadline should there be one.”

But for Weaver, just working with Broemel was a treat. A fan of My Morning Jacket for over 10 years, the video shoot offered a unique opportunity to work with a musician he had admired for sometime.

“I remained cool, but in the back of my mind, there were a few moments where I said ‘this is so freaking awesome,’” Weaver said. “It really worked out well because you couldn’t have asked for a more chill and laid back artist to work with.”

There’s more Good Day RVA videos in the works, so keep up with them on facebook here. And you can catch Broemel when he plays The Southern in Charlottesville, VA on November 11 with Trampled by Turtles lead singer Dave Simonett.
