SATURDAY: UK Folk Guitarist Michael Chapman Plays Two Shows In Richmond

by | Apr 29, 2011 | MUSIC

Veteran UK folk guitarist Michael Chapman will be playing two shows in Richmond this Saturday. A tourmate/drinkin’ buddy of John Fahey and musical collaborator with Mick Ronson, Chapman recorded for Harvest Records in the same years as Pink Floyd, Kevin Ayers, and Third Ear Band. Expect incredible steel string/slide playing, harmonics, and pastoral UK folk; with wry humor and great storytelling. Chapman is essentially doing a DIY minivan tour this week, including two shows in Richmond this Saturday, April 30: a 4:00 PM in-store performance at Steady Sounds, and a 10:00 PM show at Sprout. Both will be intimate performances from a dynamic guitar player/veteran of the 60s/70s UK psychedelic/folk scene. Definitely check it out if you’re into Pentangle, Fairport Convention, John Fahey/Takoma Records, Nick Drake, Six Organs of Admittance, Espers, Neil Young, etc. Give Michael Chapman’s WFMU session a listen for a free taste (full set with stories can be downloaded here) or cop the recent reissue of his Harvest Records LP Fully Qualified Survivor at Steady Sounds or Deep Groove.

WHAT: Michael Chapman In-Store Performance At Steady Sounds!
WHERE: Steady Sounds Records (322 W. Broad St.)
WHEN: Saturday April 30, 4 PM
ADMISSION: Free!

WHAT: Second Michael Chapman Show Of The Day, with Frankzig and Dorthia!
WHERE: Sprout (1 N. Morris St.)
WHEN: Saturday April 30, 10 PM
ADMISSION: Also free! (Keep in mind, though, that touring musicians need to pay for gas and food, among other things, so donations and merchandise purchases are strongly encouraged)

After the jump, check out Michael Chapman performing “Postcards From Scarborough,” from Fully Qualified Survivor, in 2009.
