TOMORROW NIGHT: El Ten Eleven and Junk Culture At Strange Matter

by | May 3, 2011 | MUSIC

There’s a pretty interesting show happening tomorrow night that a lot of people seem to be sleeping on. The headliners, El Ten Eleven, are a two-piece group that use effects pedals, a combination acoustic/electronic drum kit, and a unique doubleneck guitar/bass to create the sound of a lot more than just two instruments. The resulting sound is instrumental but catchy and danceable enough that you won’t even notice the lack of vocals. What’s more, the group’s mathematically-inclined songwriting and virtuoso performance technique should bring joy to fans of Hella and Lightning Bolt. Sometimes their guitarist even plays parts on both necks of his guitar/bass hybrid at the same time. It should be fascinating and awesome in a live environment, so don’t miss it! Junk Culture should be just as interesting. The solo project of Deepak Mantena, Junk Culture’s music is based around glitchy beats and sample-based hip-hop grooves. He has the same sort of crate-digging feel as DJ Shadow’s early work, and he’s released records on Girl Talk’s label Illegal Art, so he must be doing something right. His grooves are laid-back enough to inspire deep thoughts while sitting on your living room couch, but in person they’re bound to start a dance party. And speaking of dance parties, local openers Les La Britanica know all about those. Expect their booty-shaking electronic hip-hop to kick off the show in fine fashion. Overall, it should be a great night from one end to the other, so be sure to check it out!
