DAILY FIX: The Cribs, “Come On, Be A No-One”

The Cribs are a British melodic punk trio consisting of three brothers: twins Gary and Ryan Jarman, on bass and guitar respectively, and their little brother Ross on drums. I got into them when they released their excellent third album, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, back in 2007.

They were joined on their fourth album, 2009’s Ignore The Ignorant, by the venerable Johnny Marr (The Smiths, Electronic, Modest Mouse), who added some great lead guitar lines to singles like “We Were Aborted” and “Cheat On Me.” Now, pared back down to a trio, the Jarman brothers have returned, proving with this great new single that they can still write the excellent hooks that powered all of their previous work. The video is an energy blast in the “rapid-fire tour documentary” template that’s been a staple of music videos since at least the mid-80s. Director Patrick Stanton shot it during a UK tour The Cribs took earlier this year, and caught plenty of great live performance footage, as well as shots of stagediver maniacs, instrument-smashing, and other acts of music-fueled insanity. It’s a lot of fun.

“Come On, Be A No-One” is the first single from In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull, the fifth Cribs album, which will be released in less than a week, on Tuesday, May 7, on Wichita Recordings. You can pre-order it by clicking HERE; you better believe I’m getting a copy.
