Another wildly unpredictable March weekend is upon us, and I have no idea what the weather will be like. But the good news is that it’s the first weekend of spring–so no matter what it’s like outside this weekend, we can expect things to improve in the near future. Well, at least for a few weeks, until the stifling summer heat gets here around mid-April. Whee! Here are a few things happening around town that are guaranteed to be highlights of the weekend:

Friday, March 22: Boombox @ The National
Boombox are gracing the stage at The National this Friday, playing, in their words, “backbeat, psychedelia and funky house sounds.” This show might not be everybody’s bag, but if you’re into the jam thing you should definitely check them out. The band is made up of multiple producers, DJs, songwriters, and instrumentalists, and they have enough material to keep the dance floor moving during the entire show.
Friday, March 22: GayRVA presents Mixer @ New York Deli
If you are LGBTQ or an ally of the LGBTQ community, come out to New York Deli on Friday from five to eight to mingle, mix, and enjoy drink specials. You’ll make some great friends and professional connections and meet the awesome young cultures who are Out and present in Richmond. The event is hosted by my good friend and fellow RVA Mag employee Teddy Gregson, and promises to be a good and productive time.
Friday, March 22: Rosetta @ Strange Matter
Well-loved Indie band Rosetta are excited to finally take the stage at Strange Matter after they had to cancel on a show scheduled for earlier this month. They will be joined by locals The Blue Letter, Shy Low, Red Money, and PYITFB, all of whom pack a heavy alternative punch. Seven dollars gets you in, and this is the late show. Don’t miss it!
Saturday, March 23: The Lonely Teardrops @ Emilio’s
The Lonely Teardrops are male and female duo from NOVA who play a distinct and interesting blend of surf rock, girl garage, mod music, soul, and blues. They are a bit reminiscent of The Cramps or The White Stripes, and they’re pretty different from a lot of the bands you typically see in Richmond. Plus Emilio’s is a laid back atmosphere and always affordable. Also appearing will be The Hissy Fits.
Sunday, March 24: Vibe Ruiner @ Wonderland
Wonderland doesn’t host shows all the time, but when they do it’s a treat; they have an awesome, dimly-lit atmosphere for seeing punk and metal shows, they always have good drink specials, and the whole place is decorated with blue and green lights and animal skulls. This Sunday’s show seems like it will definitely be a good time, it features Christi, a surfy-sounding band; Whoa, a Richmond band with two bassists, violin, and keyboards; and New Orleans garage punk bands Opposable Thumbs and Vibe Ruiner. This sounds like an interesting way to end the weekend.
