But if there’s one thing we’ve learned by watching this indie-rock quartet develop over their relatively brief career, it’s that the members of White Laces are not content to rest on their laurels.

But if there’s one thing we’ve learned by watching this indie-rock quartet develop over their relatively brief career, it’s that the members of White Laces are not content to rest on their laurels. Since 2013 began, they’ve already released a digital-only live EP, Interzone, which featured new recordings of several tracks from Moves, as well as a quasi-title track that didn’t actually appear on the album, entitled “Deep Moves.” And now they’re about to drop a brand new 7 inch EP, featuring a studio version of “Deep Moves” as well as a new track, “Ascend.”
“Deep Moves” is a bit more developed than the live version that appeared on Interzone, with a fleshed-out ending giving the song a more solid structure without minimizing the great lead guitar melodies that make it so memorable. Appropriately in light of the song’s title, “Deep Moves” makes an apt coda to White Laces’ inaugural full-length release, with the same reverbed-out feel that characterized that album at work on this track as well. “Ascend” does a better job of indicating the way forward for the group, starting quietly and building over its four-minute length towards an explosion that never fully takes place. “Ascend”‘s glittering guitar melodies mix with the rhythm section’s more urgent feel to split the difference between the heavier sound of White Laces’ first few EPs and the more atmospheric sound of Moves, resulting in an excellent track that features some bonus Fleetwood Mac lyrical quotes for the discerning listener.
