Will Richmond’s Pipeline Trail Be Closed for Good?

Richmond’s Pipeline Trail, a popular spot for locals seeking scenic views of the James River and easy access to Brown’s Island, is at risk of being permanently closed as reported by Axios. The trail has been closed since mid-July after the pipe it rests on failed which we wrote about HERE, releasing raw sewage into the river.

A petition has been started to save it, sign it HERE!

Current Status

  • Closure: The Pipeline Trail remains closed due to safety concerns about the aging infrastructure, including the catwalk over the pipe.
  • City’s Position: A spokesperson for the Department of Public Utilities stated that the city is still designing a permanent solution for the pipeline, and it is unclear if repairs to the pipe have been completed.
  • Access Warning: The city cautions against accessing the area near the pipe due to potential hazards.

Background

  • Pipeline Trail: This trail, located under the rail line, offers views of the river, access to a sandy beach, and a close-up experience of the rapids. The trail has been a unique recreational spot in Richmond for nearly 50 years.
  • Ownership: The land the Pipeline Trail occupies is owned by CSX rail company. The city holds an easement for the trail and catwalk.
  • Rail Line: The trail runs beneath a CSX rail line, one of the busiest coal lines on the East Coast.

Next Steps

The future of the Pipeline Trail is currently uncertain. Discussions between the city and CSX are ongoing, but there is a risk that the trail may not reopen. Residents who wish to see the trail preserved are encouraged to sign the petition urging the city to reopen this iconic part of Richmond’s riverfront.
