Son Volt, the band Jay Farrar’s been leading off and on for nearly two decades, is coming to Washington DC, and we’ve got a pair of tickets that you can win! The latest Son Volt album, Honky Tonk, just came out in March, and they’re touring all over America in support. This is their first new album in four years, and as the title may already have indicated, their sound on the new record has a bit more of a country influence than their previous album, American Central Dust. But then, Son Volt have always had a knack for mingling elements from folk, country, rock n’ roll, and old-time music together into an excellent blend that generally gets tagged as Americana. Add Jay Farrar’s deep, soulful voice and brilliant, insightful lyrics on top, and you get music that stays relevant and enjoyable year after year, no matter which genre it seems closest to at that particular moment. With an eight-album catalog and a variety of different sounds to draw from, you can also expect these guys to play a live set that touches on all the different elements that make Son Volt the unique, tough-to-categorize band they are. It’s gonna be a great show.

Son Volt released a video for “Hearts And Minds,” the opening track and first single from Honky Tonk, just a couple months ago, and it’s a great way to get an idea of exactly what to expect when you see them on June 20. The fiddles and waltz time make this a particularly countrified track, and the shots of Jay singing and playing his guitar in a room full of old-time barroom memoriabilia add a great atmosphere to the video. We don’t know whether the 9:30 Club will be decked-out in a similar fashion when you get there, but it’s always a possibility. So check out the video, then go check out Son Volt live next month!
