Already the pride of the LA music scene, Local Natives have been making waves all over the USA with the release earlier this year of their second LP, Hummingbird, which reached #12 on the Billboard album charts. Starting out back in 2009 with their self-released debut, Gorilla Manor, Local Natives’ blend of lush vocal harmonies, strong melodies, and epic choruses quickly put them on the national radar, and they were soon signed by Frenchkiss Records, home of Passion Pit and, at one time, The Hold Steady. Recording their second album in New York last year with the help of Aaron Dessner from The National (the band, not the venue), some East Coast influences from the likes of Grizzly Bear seeped into their sound, as well as an increased sense of melancholy inspired by upheavals in the band’s lineup and personal lives. Their music grew all the richer for it, though, and Hummingbird has enraptured a broad cross-section of the indie world since hitting the streets back in January. With recent appearances on Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman and an upcoming performance at Bonnaroo, Local Natives are only headed upwards from here, so catch them at The National (the venue, not the band) now, while you can still see them at such an intimate venue!

Just to prepare you for what’s in store when Local Natives take the stage, here’s an amazing unstaged performance that Local Natives filmed back in 2010 for French web series La Blogotheque. Performing “Who Knows, Who Cares,” from their debut album, the members of the group walked through an outdoor shopping center in Paris, singing and playing instruments as they went. The final moment of the video, with the entire group harmonizing as they perform the song’s dramatic climax, is arresting in its intensity. And granted, with the band onstage and using their full complement of instrumentation, you can expect a slightly different effect from their performance of this and other tunes–but the emotional effect will only be intensified. Get ready.
