Ten years ago, a small record store and urban apparel boutique opened at Broad and Adams St. downtown in Jackson Ward. Many wondered if the store would make it ten days. This was before First Fridays, Broad Appetite, the millions of renovated condos/apartments, the large influx of restaurants, VCU expansion, the opening of many art galleries and coffee shops, and the steady foot traffic all of it brought.

Ten years ago, a small record store and urban apparel boutique opened at Broad and Adams St. downtown in Jackson Ward. Many wondered if the store would make it ten days. This was before First Fridays, Broad Appetite, the millions of renovated condos/apartments, the large influx of restaurants, VCU expansion, the opening of many art galleries and coffee shops, and the steady foot traffic all of it brought. Put it this way: back then Broad St. around Jackson Ward was still full of boarded up brick and mortar shops. There was much more crime in the area. It was pretty much dead. There was hope for that area blooming, but why would a store centered on selling techno, house, drum and bass, and other electronic music open down there in ’03? The rave and underground dance scene wasn’t even that big at the time. However, the power couple of Joanna Oremland and Jesse Split said “what the fuck,” saw a small niche market, rolled the dice and opened Turnstyle.
Ten years later, after numerous years of hard work, and quality marketing, Turnstyle is rolling right along. And so is the real underground dance and DJ scene in our fair city. Turnstyle has a lot to do with that. Joanna and Jesse made a horserace out of it, and the store is now the best local retail success story, at least in my lifetime. Turnstyle proved you can succeed in Downtown Richmond, and many have followed. That stretch of Broad between Belvidere and 2nd St. has shaped up to be another fabulous destination for art, music, culture, and local goods shopping, and it’s just plain interesting to live in and be a part of. I–and many others–love you, Turnstyle. Thanks for having the biggest balls in Richmond. Here’s to ten more!

Nymph, Snack Truck, Dumbwaiter @ Strange Matter – $6/All Ages
Touring in support of their new LP, New Millennium Prayer, NYMPH just cannot get enough of that sweet love that is a Richmond audience. Grace St. will of course have open arms for this stellar psych, noise, and experimental jazz ensemble that will take you deep beyond any orgasm you’ve ever had. Never get desperate around this NYMPH, as the music is a creative groundswell amassed towards emotions that splinter the cost of losing faith in music that matters. This ritual, lead by Matt McDermott, and the transfixing vocals of Eri Shoji, is a free experience in the freedom of mind, body, and soul.
Providing local support will be two stalwarts of psychedelic beach fortitude, Snack Truck and Dumbwaiter. Snack Truck is reformed and ready to rumble. After a few shows this past spring to shake the cobwebs, these sergeants are ready to explode your dreams. Dumbwaiter fits in perfectly towards this cavalcade with their instrumental math journeys that put the Algebra in Avant-garde. See you at the show.

You could never ever come up with a music festival as amazing as Epic Fest will be this year. Thanks to the good folks at Slapdash and those beer dudes over there in Golden, Colorado, Richmond has a four day festival spotlighting the very best local and regional singer-songwriter, r&b, soul, neo-soul, hip hop, and experimental hip hop this area has to offer. Putting all these incredible artists together over four days and five venues is a task worthy of not only being a Show of the Year candidate, but how about Event of the Year. Who says the true underground hip hop and r&b scene is dead is this city? Those stupid erroneous rumors are so 2008. Shit, Epic Fest is leading the way for all America’s underground scenes. This festival just proves this notion times ten. Now I’m not going to single anybody out. All these artists are amazing, and if you don’t attend any of these nights–at least one, come on now–I highly suggest you leave Richmond for good. This year’s Epic Fest is a miracle, and I am so proud that it has grown into the beast that it is. Truly, I’m telling you here, this will be a shining light on our city, the incredible scene here, and easily some of the best artists and performers this city/region has. They all have something in common. They work their asses off and hone their craft for you, so I demand you give back by attending this party beyond all parties. You can sleep next week. Man! Is it Wednesday yet?!!!

If the Epic Fest isn’t for you – not everybody is into hip hop, soul, and r&b (I’m not sure why) – check out the best benefit show lineup I’ve ever seen. The Huff Fest, spread out over four days at Strange Matter and Gallery 5, is going to be historical. The Huff Fest was put together to help a true friend to the Richmond music community, Elijah Von Cramon.
Von Cramon was unfortunately hit by a car last winter. Lucky to be alive, he nonetheless sustained a fractured pelvis, broken shoulder, broken femur, chipped teeth, and brain damage. Elijah’s band, Charlotte NC natives/Richmond favorites Paint Fumes, were about to head out on US and European tours in support of their full-length debut, Uck Life. Instead, Elijah has spent the past three months recuperating. Since Elijah does not have health insurance, all of this costs tons of money, so now it’s our turn to come out to any, if not all, of these four shows, and help Elijah by donating to a most worthy cause. Plus, you will get to see the best bands in Richmond. I’m serious – this lineup is a stacked menu of Richmond’s most talented people.

Benefit Show for Anthony ‘Ant’ Anderson featuring Kid Is Qual, DJ EHRL @ Bellytimber – Donations please/21+
Continuing on in a week of quality benefit shows, this is another important one, and should have your patronage. Anthony “Ant” Anderson, who is a great friend to Bellytimber and the community, needs a kidney transplant, and you know what that means. As affordable healthcare has gone out the window, just imagine what a kidney transplant would cost. Here’s where you come in. The awesome band Kid is Qual, along with DJ EHRL, will supply you and your friends with marvelous tunes that will help jog your giving spirit. There will also be a silent auction for the art on the walls over the course of the evening. Come one, come all, to this seminal event for dancing and getting loose with the spirits, all the while helping a friend out.

For quality rock and roll rhythm and blues music on a Monday evening, there’s nothing better than taking in the Jon Barnes Band. Joining Jon will be Atlanta’s Parker Smith and the Bandwith. The Anericana roots band has a lot of folks talking throughout the south. Smith’s music comes through an acoustic river full of melodies and ear capturing notes. The south isn’t dirty anymore, its crystal clear and clean, thanks to the beautiful music of Parker Smith and the Bandwith.
The beautifully talented singer-songwriter Bethany Taulbee, from right here in Richmond, opens the show. Whether she’s on guitar, mandolin, or flute, to go along with her inspirational vocals, watch out for this rising songstress.

Benefit Show for the Doshier Family (Oklahoma tornado disaster relief) with The Kindling Kind, Anousheh @ Gallery 5 – $5/All Ages
The other benefit show you really should check out this week is the benefit for the Doshier Family of Moore, OK. Corina Doshier and her family lost everything just weeks ago in the Oklahoma tornado disaster. Her brother Eric lives in Richmond, and when event organizers caught wind of this tragedy, they knew the people of Richmond would be willing to help.
Performing will be the delightfully ambient indie rock of the Kindling Kind and arguably the best singer songwriter in town, Anousheh. So, come show your support for a family in need, and hear some of the most pivotal music in the summer of ’13. See you at the show!

Manic Focus, Bassdread, Ethan Glass, Peruvian Pineapple @ The Camel – $7/18+
Chicago’s Manic Focus is the musical conception of John “JmaC” McCarten. He takes the electronic music you are used to into another realm. Being all about hip-hop beats and electronic music, Manic Focus fusses these two genres with a bass-induced sound that will only have you dancing.
Continuing in this evening of bombastic EDM, Baltimore’s Bassdread will also take the Camel stage with their enlightening bass driven music. Richmond and DC’s Ethan Glass is a high rising DJ that rotates what he describes as acid-crunk-hop-step-nuclear-dance-music. Well with that description, I know I’ll be there with my special astro-physic dancing shoes as well.
