Here’s a tape from local emcee Jae Dallas, aka Dilly, who brings us his latest project Bare With Me. I’ve been hearing a lot about Jae and his crew–which is also a graphic design company–The Living Sickness Designs. This mixtape mixes lyrical metaphors with poetic rhythm and free spirited rhymes.

Here’s a tape from local emcee Jae Dallas, aka Dilly, who brings us his latest project Bare With Me. I’ve been hearing a lot about Jae and his crew–which is also a graphic design company–The Living Sickness Designs. This mixtape mixes lyrical metaphors with poetic rhythm and free spirited rhymes. His style brings you back to the early era of hip hop with rhymes and rhythm. This mixtape features a lot of covers and beats from familiar industry artists, but Dallas still sticks to his style and represents himself and his team. “Hi Mom,” a track where he continuously goes in on Jay-Z’s “Excuse Me Miss Remix” instrumental, references what people say when they’re able to get on camera, so you already get a good idea of his attitude on this track. On “Different People,” he brings his teammates Cool Cliff and Johnny Mo with him, and annihilates the track. In addition to his rhyming on this tape, Dilly takes care of some of the production as well. Keep watch for him and his team this year–they’re bringing something fresh to RVA. A. Day – A Day In the Life (Datpiff)
The second I pressed play on this mixtape I was highly impressed with the delivery from local emcee Allan Day, aka A. Day, formerly known as PJ Murda. Like Dilly, he is part of ThaLSD crew. They say never to judge a book by its cover, but the times I ran into him he was a humble and relaxed person. Now, though, I see that lyrically, he’s a problem in RVA. “Money Hungry” is one of those tracks that catch you as soon as you hear the artist’s flow. On “RVA,” he describes how he grew up here in Richmond overtop of a Common beat. I appreciate the fact that he can do a nice job with the beat while repping our city and telling us about his life after 22 years of being here. Throughout the tape, you hear plenty of tracks about smoking, having fun, partying, and being an artist in RVA. “Heatwave” though, leaves me with only one word…WOW. I was highly impressed, because with this track, A. Day proves that he honestly has potential to be a spectacular voice in RVA. I hope to hear more from him and ThaLSD this year and see some performances from the crew.
