Look out all you rock n’ rollers–Father John Misty is coming to the National next week! He’ll be bringing his unique music and colorful stage presence to the RVA stage, and you could see the show for free courtesy of your friends at RVA Magazine! Father John, born Joshua Tillman, started out as an earnest young folkie, recording solo albums under the name J. Tillman and playing drums on the second Fleet Foxes album, Helplessness Blues. Then a couple of years ago, he sorta got tired of himself. He decided to forgo all of his previous work and become a tongue-in-cheek version of a psychedelic guru, complete with hippie-influenced songs and wild onstage dancing. Surprisingly, the act became a huge success, with 2012 debut album Fear Fun (Sub Pop) receiving widespread acclaim and gaining him much more attention that he’d ever received from behind the Fleet Foxes drum kit.

Father John’s music carries influences from the psychedelic late 60s and country-rock early 70s forward into the new millenium, at times resembling both Neil Young and Gram Parsons as well as newer bands like My Morning Jacket. With Tillman’s wry sense of humor at the forefront of his lyrical tales, Father John Misty adds up to a unique musical experience within the modern music scene, as can be seen in his recent video for Fear Fun‘s “I’m Writing A Novel”:

It’s also something you can see from Misty’s current tour opener–not a young up-and-coming indie rock band, but an experimental comedian named Kate Berlant. Clearly this is no ordinary indie show–after all, how often does an indie band show up in town with comedy as an opening act? Father John Misty’s evening at the National will be entertaining throughout, and you really should make sure you’re there.
