It’s almost time for another First Friday Artwalk, which means RVA TV’s Last Friday is here! In this edition of Last Friday, our host, Baylen Forcier, swings by the ADA Gallery to talk with Matthew Fisher, 1708 Gallery to listen to the sound wall installed by John Henry Blatter, and Gallery 5 to check out the Zine Fest and talk with Nate Waggoner, creator of the zine, Missed Connections.

ADA Gallery: Contemporary Fine Art

Matthew Fisher displayed his latest show, Lonesome George, at ADA Gallery. Fisher’s work takes you on an adventure with hints of the past and future all being symbolic for something.

Fisher explains his paintings are constructed ‘from the farthest point back forward’. The Major, is an acrylic on linen piece demonstrating a clean death with a plant standing in an upside down skull. To explore more of his paintings, visit the official Web site of Matthew Fisher’s works.

Gallery 1708

Video and sound artist, John Henry Blatter, displays a wall of sound, with a variety of speakers representing an individual moment. As Nickel explains, “You’re one with yourself. The sound is a collection of stories from the community. All the stories revolve around the moment from the sad and tragic to the subblind.”

Gallery 1708 displays a variety of performing and visual arts in its gallery, and also organizes the now yearly, InLight Richmond festival. The gallery is located in the Historic Richmond Arts District.

Gallery5 & Richmond Zine Fest

Richmond’s Zine Fest was held on two days this year, November 6th and 7th, at Gallery5. The fest is a place where sellers could sell and trade zines with vendors and workshops. These zine’s are filled with pages of anything you’d like it to: comics, stories, poetry and music related writings.

Nate Waggoner explains one of his zines, Missed Connections and says they’re “just comical little situations.”

Keep checking back for the next Zine Fest at www.richmondzinefest.org.

The Devils in the Digger Details: Cinema, Censorship, and Power

"The Devils is a harsh film but it's a harsh subject. I wish the people who were horrified and appalled by it would have read the book, because the bare facts are far more horrible than anything in the film." - Ken Russell from An Appalling Talent: Ken Russell by John...

Review | Grace and Glorie is So Good You Forget it’s Acting

Yes, this is a review of the play Grace and Glorie, currently at Hanover Tavern. It is the Hanover Tavern part of that sentence that I want to focus on first. I’m probably going to get some side-eye for this, but I completely forgot Hanover Tavern existed. What in the...

Review | BLKS is a Mixed Bag at Richmond Triangle Players

I often come off like a chihuahua on sugar pills when reviewing plays for this magazine. I am excitable, yes, but never in the service of idle flattery. I also take no joy in being critical of people’s hard work. I’ve said this whole thing before several times, but I...

Review | Dog Mom is Theatre at Its Best, Here or Anywhere Else

There are days of doing this when I just get to gush. Today is one of those days.  I have had the pleasure this past year of witnessing some of the best theatre of my life. VA Rep’s Primary Trust floored me. Richmond Shakespeare continued their epic run of hits...
