Speaking this afternoon on the contentious floor vote to nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Senator Tim Kaine, announced he would be voting no on the controversial judge’s nomination. Citing two reasons for his opposition, Kaine stated that the nation needs, “a justice with the backbone as an independent check against both president and congress” highlighting the fact that lifetime appointments are given so they can make rulings without fear of “losing their jobs”. But that Kavanaugh as a layer and judge has embraced an “unusual deference to executive power, which is one of the reason’s the president nominated him,” and that the judge would not hold President Trump accountable to the law.
The second issue, which was delivered in two parts referred to the allegations of sexual assault and how blatantly partisan “we would want the Supreme Court to be.” Kaine, mentioning Dr. Blassey Ford and Deborah Ramirez, said, “both Ford and Ramirez allege that Kavanaugh under the influence of alcohol and in the presence of other people assaulted or sexually humiliated people while others stood by laughing.” Articulating what survivors of sexual assault have been feeling throughout these preceedinds, the senator acknowledged that Republicans in the Senate have treated these women as pawns in a political conspiracy.
