Chris Milk says The View from Here is Fine

by | Feb 4, 2011 | ART

I met Chris Milk at Eggspace. I don’t think it is around anymore but I remember it being pretty much a shack where the local underground guys would show work to friends and have late night get togethers on the river. I felt like I was being told a secret and that I knew something while the city slept on. I remember music, drink being passed around freely, a few laughs and thinking that the work of Chris Milk was something I would see again.

That was several years ago and Milk has been doing it for awhile but his work still has that same quality I liked back then. He is having a conversation with me. His images are a direct line to what he sees and what he thinks about in his everyday. Time with friends and family. Playing music. Contemplating the infinite. He explains himself through paint with a childlike curiosity and calls it like he he sees it.

I know this guy. He is like an old friend whose life intersects mine every couple of years, maybe next time I will actually say hi.

Check out his new art and music tonight at Ghostprint Gallery.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. Photos | Warriors in Bloom at Agecroft Hall

For one weekend, Agecroft Hall stopped being a museum and became a kingdom.  What began as a fundraiser to help launch Richmond's first Renaissance Faire has grown into a destination of its own. Warriors in Bloom, created by the folks at Virago Alley, returned with...

Everything We Did Was A Bad Idea

Editor's Note: Writer's Block is a space for Virginia writers to share personal essays, fiction, memoir, and works that fall somewhere in between. We’re standing on some corner in downtown Richmond: me, my two friends, a pair of women, and their male friend we had met...

Review | SAFETY! Swings Big But Falls Just Short

WARNING: This review contains baseball metaphors.  Cadence Theatre’s Pipeline New Works Program is at the plate again, with its last batter, Witchduck, staring at home from third base. It is literally the first swing ever for the new musical, SAFETY!, at Firehouse...

Before Anyone Was Watching

I went to Virginia MOCA expecting to hear Andy Howell talk about skateboarding. Instead, I left thinking about community and how people find each other. Howell's installation opens Seamless, the museum's new exhibition exploring the overlap between art and design. At...

The Strange Afterlife of Virginia’s President Heads

Editor's Note: Reminder, the sculptures are located on private property and are not open for general visitation. Access is available only through scheduled guided tours, with Labor Day weekend currently expected to be the final tour on the calendar. Tour information...

Review | ‘As You Like It’ is Just How I Like It

If you’ve been reading these reviews for a while, you’ll notice I love me some context. Especially surrounding William Shakespeare’s plays. One of my favorite things about the existence of Richmond Shakespeare is that they’ve forced me to go back to the English Lit...
