Deftones, Incubus, and Death From Above 1979 are touring this summer and 2002 me is effing pumped

Alright, alright, I get it – everything I was into in sophomore year of high school is now cool again and going on tour.

Alright, alright, I get it – everything I was into in sophomore year of high school is now cool again and going on tour.

I’m going to preface this to let folks know the closest chance you’ll get to see this hilarious and hopefully amazing line up is Charlotte, NC, in early August, so for the uber-committed, this is your chance to relive some really intense memories of getting busted in the back of homeroom.

So yea, Incubus and Deftones are going on tour this summer.

The press release we got has some hilarious language about both artists being “multi-platinum” like RIAA numbers mean anything to anyone anymore – the important thing to remember here is the band that brought Around the Fur and Make Yourself are going to play on the same stage as the wall-o-sound masters that are Death From Above 1917.

Lets run some numbers here – all three bands have or are aiming to put albums out this year.

It’s been four years since Incubus dropped If Not Now, When? an album which was completely off my radar, but some of my interns seemed really excited about.

They’ve got plans to release a “non-traditional” album in 2015. Founding member Mike Einziger told Billboard.com that although the band didn’t have “any plans of making this record” the new music is “pretty indicative of where we are now. This is what the band sounds like in 2015.”

Whatever that means.

I saw these guys at the Nissan Pavilion in high school and Brandon Boyd sang “Make Yourself” on a pillar with a massive spotlight back-lighting him. It was pretty impressive. If you’re thinking of going and kicking that song on right now, let me save you the heart ache, record scratches mixed with guitars did NOT age well.

But hey, judge for yourself:

Alright, it’s still pretty good.

Also, you can catch Incubus when they come to RVA on May 2nd as part of the XL102 Big Field Day.

Up next is Deftones. When I saw this press release I did what a lot of you are probably thinking about doing – googling to see whatever happened to that medical tragedy which befell one of their members.

It was their bassist, Chi Cheng, in a car accident ending with a 4-year-coma and dying of cardiac arrest in 2013. Ain’t nothing funny about that, nor the money problems he faced while in treatment.

But lead vocalist Chino and friends pressed on and they’ve got an 8th studio album they are working on set to release this later year. In 2012 they released Koi No Yokan which Revolver naming their “Album of the Year” which is kind of a ‘king-without-a-crown’ scenario, but hey, good for them.

As for Death From Above 1979, these Canadian fellas put out their first record in 10 years last year, The Physical World, and it was not much to write home about. Literally. It came out, I listened to it, I’m in the unique opportunity to write about music I dig, and I didn’t write about the record.

I was honestly more impressed wit the duo’s DJ/EDM work with MSTRKRFT in the late 00’s, but their live performance is supposed to be legendary, so if I was going to invest in the trip to see any stop on this tour, I’d make a point to make sure Death From Above were a part of it.

Tickets go on sale for this tour next Friday, 4/24.
