Canvas Clash: Lively’s Fluffy Doom Versus Adams’ Tattooed Reality

by | Nov 9, 2010 | ART, EVENTS, MUSEUM & GALLERY NEWS, PAINTING & SCULPTURE, TATTOO CULTURE

There are 2 shows hanging right now that are worth checking out.

Richmond native Matt Lively is in Farmville’s J. Fergeson Gallery with his latest Ignoring the Roar of Doom. His collection of cute human-animals make for a funny twist on the title as they are oblivious to the impending death and destruction that is about to come. An accomplished commercial artist, Matt Lively has been on the Richmond scene for years with his often-time fluffy idea of the modern world. You can find more info on this show at www.jfergesongallery.com.

Bruce Adam’s very large paintings from Drawing Blood III: Tattooed Women were impressive to see up close last First Friday. Robust brush strokes and an honest portrayal of these ladies and their skin art are to be enjoyed on big canvases –these web images don’t do them justice. If you are downtown the next couple of weeks, you should make it a point to stop in. I could explain the idea behind the show but the work and the title speaks for itself. In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. Review | Virginia Rep Gets Everything Wrong, and It’s Hilarious

Okay, I wasn’t prepared for the complete gut-busting insanity of The Play That Goes Wrong at Virginia Repertory Theatre’s November Theatre. Before heading to the Iron Blossom Festival this past Sunday, I caught a matinee. I didn’t know much about this play other than...

Review | ‘Confederates’ Doesn’t Let Anyone Off Easy

“Oh, I’m going to have a field day with this.” These were my exact words to friend and artist Kyle Epps as I got up from my seat at Firehouse Theatre Saturday night. As we shuffled out of the theatre into the lobby, I took inventory of the stack of insights Dominique...

Review | Oscar Wilde Still Knows Exactly Who We Are

The Importance of Being Ernest has been on my radar since I was 13, when my beloved Morrissey mentioned Oscar Wilde in an interview. (Mind you, this was long before Morrissey’s far-right weirdo rants.) As a massive fan of the arch, wry, witty lyrics of the Smiths and...

Review | Little Bear Ridge Road is an Artistic Gut Punch

Little Bear Ridge Road, does something you rarely see in popular media these days. It reminisces on the period during and just after Covid. Somehow, collectively, we’ve silently agreed to just not talk about it anymore. We don’t want to relive it on TV, in books, or...

Richmond’s Famous Romantix Mural Gets a New Chapter

For a decade, the mural outside the Romantix adult store, formerly Taboo, on Midlothian Turnpike has been one of Richmond's most debated pieces of public art. Now it's gone, replaced by a new collaboration between tattoo artist and muralist Jesse Smith and Miami-based...
