MUST READ: Mickael Broth’s Gated Community

by | Jul 31, 2013 | ART

I finally read my copy of Gated Community by Mickael Broth after looking at it for several weeks. I want to say, wow. I knew he had went to jail for graffiti but never got the full blown story until now. Rich in Richmond graffiti history with thought provoking conversations of what drives the vandals/artists that risk their health and freedom to do this stuff.

The first book covers his early years from his start in Richmond to the infamous REFUSE/SEEK double tag over the I-295 that led to the police bum rushing his tiny apartment.

Just out last week, the second edition is about his life in jail – the learning curve, race relations and thinking like an animal.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is.
