Richmond is getting its first Japanese tattoo mural

Richmond is getting its first Japanese tattoo-inspired mural-and you get to be apart of the fun starting today.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts launched the RVA Japanese Scavenger Hunt today and from now until May 28, the museum will put a piece of the tattoo around the city and you must use your savvy detective skills to find them.

You’ll also have the help of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as the museum will be dropping clues each day to help you out.

To get in on the action first find the piece, take a photo, (guess people will be calling them tat selfies now-ugh) and then post it on Instagram with the hashtag #ttthunt.

If you’re like Nancy Drew or Mr. Holmes himself and manage to find all six pieces, post the last photo with the hashtag #tttfound.

Once all of the clues have been revealed, the tattoo will go up on the NP&D building at Foushee and Cary St. as a mural and, of course in true Richmond fashion, the event will culminate with a party featuring beer and free swag.

The shindig is going down along side the NP&D building on May 30th, and the first 50 people who complete the hunt win a free ticket to the upcoming exhibit at the VMFA, Japanese Tattoo: Perseverance, Art, and Tradition, which will run from May 29-Sept. 27.

Grand prize winners will receive a free year-long VMFA membership or free drinks and a ride from the Mural Release Party at the brewery.

Richmond has sought out Japanese muralist MOYA to complete the mural.

From Okayama, MOYA got his start live drawing when he first discovered an artist take black ink to a a gigantic white wall while in Art College. This led him to take on his own style using a black ball point pen, which he describes as a “fusion of traditional Japanese style and street art.”

MOYA will paint his mural live across the ND& P Building, located at 1 E. Cary St., May 30.

Check out the event here.

Review | ‘Come From Away’ is the Best We’ve Ever Been

Do you remember the rollerblading guy with the American flag kit on September 12th? We will never forget the 11th for the horrors, but do you remember the 12th? The 13th? If you do, I don’t even have to say which year. If you don’t, let me tell you a little bit about...
