ROA Kept A Promise And Is Coming Back To RVA

ROA was telling me he would be back. He had just finished the triple stacked turtles on Have A Nice Day Cafe and we were sharing a cigarette when he mentioned he liked Richmond.

ROA was telling me he would be back. He had just finished the triple stacked turtles on Have A Nice Day Cafe and we were sharing a cigarette when he mentioned he liked Richmond. It was a bit cold that day but it reminded him of his home in Ghent, as well as London, his next stop for a solo show. I was told months later by a well informed source that ROA sold out that show in London and was a legit millionaire. I can believe it.

As far as I can tell, ROA lives off coffee and cigs and dresses as simply as possible. His concerns seem to rest on making his art and chatting it up with pretty women. In the year since he was in RVA, ROA has traveled the world making his mark with an array of monster sized murals from the Outback of Australia to the back alleys of Buenos Aires. The Richmond Mural Project starts on April 15th and ROA will be flying in to be part of the show. I look forward to hanging with him again and you should make every effort to meet him. A man of his talents won’t be here long.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. Review | BLKS is a Mixed Bag at Richmond Triangle Players

I often come off like a chihuahua on sugar pills when reviewing plays for this magazine. I am excitable, yes, but never in the service of idle flattery. I also take no joy in being critical of people’s hard work. I’ve said this whole thing before several times, but I...

Review | Dog Mom is Theatre at Its Best, Here or Anywhere Else

There are days of doing this when I just get to gush. Today is one of those days.  I have had the pleasure this past year of witnessing some of the best theatre of my life. VA Rep’s Primary Trust floored me. Richmond Shakespeare continued their epic run of hits...

Studio Two Three Is Beefing With Bots. Among Other Things

Studio Two Three has been around long enough to forget how likely it was to fail. Sixteen years ago, a small group of friends wanted to keep making art in Richmond. They pooled money from working in local restaurants to pay rent, borrowed equipment and built an...

Richmond Got a Little Filthier. John Waters Was Here.

Monday night I got taken to a church of filth. The Pope of Trash, the Prince of Puke, the Sultan of Sleaze, John Waters, graced the Byrd Theatre for a sold-out one-man show. The actor, writer and director became famous for cult classics like Pink Flamingos, Hairspray...

It’s Still Our City Ep. 24 | Ed Harrington

RVA Mag and NODDERLY presents It’s Still Our City, a podcast hosted by Harrison Christy and with Clair Morgan as co-host and producer through NODDERLY. "Ed Harrington moved to Richmond in 1993 to study art at VCU. At VCU, he was a Communication Arts major with a...

Review | Virginia Rep Gets Everything Wrong, and It’s Hilarious

Okay, I wasn’t prepared for the complete gut-busting insanity of The Play That Goes Wrong at Virginia Repertory Theatre’s November Theatre. Before heading to the Iron Blossom Festival this past Sunday, I caught a matinee. I didn’t know much about this play other than...
