THIS WEEKEND: Richmond Illustrators Club 4th Juried Show

by | Jun 2, 2011 | ART

The Richmond Illustrators Club Fourth Juried Show opens Friday June 3, 2011 at Ghostprint Gallery, from 7-10 pm, as part of the First Friday Artwalk! There will be a preview opening Thursday, June 2 from 6-8 pm.

The Richmond Illustrators Club Juried Shows are locally organized events that draw international attention, while reminding Richmond of its own remarkable presence in the illustration world. The club aims to create a bridge between the disparate network of incredible illustrators nationwide and the rich, ever-growing illustration community locally. With the establishment of The Art Department RVA Pod, the continued strength of the VCU Communication Arts Department and a thriving gallery scene, Richmond is an inspirational place for illustrators and artists of all stripes. With hundreds of entries from across the country and even internationally to consider, the jurors narrowed it down to their 40 favorites, spanning many different themes, mediums, and genres. Their selections represent the varied uses of illustration today, and the show overall aims to showcase the broad relevance of illustration, in addition to different modes of visual narrative and communication. Review | ‘Confederates’ Doesn’t Let Anyone Off Easy

“Oh, I’m going to have a field day with this.” These were my exact words to friend and artist Kyle Epps as I got up from my seat at Firehouse Theatre Saturday night. As we shuffled out of the theatre into the lobby, I took inventory of the stack of insights Dominique...

Review | Oscar Wilde Still Knows Exactly Who We Are

The Importance of Being Ernest has been on my radar since I was 13, when my beloved Morrissey mentioned Oscar Wilde in an interview. (Mind you, this was long before Morrissey’s far-right weirdo rants.) As a massive fan of the arch, wry, witty lyrics of the Smiths and...

Review | Little Bear Ridge Road is an Artistic Gut Punch

Little Bear Ridge Road, does something you rarely see in popular media these days. It reminisces on the period during and just after Covid. Somehow, collectively, we’ve silently agreed to just not talk about it anymore. We don’t want to relive it on TV, in books, or...

Richmond’s Famous Romantix Mural Gets a New Chapter

For a decade, the mural outside the Romantix adult store, formerly Taboo, on Midlothian Turnpike has been one of Richmond's most debated pieces of public art. Now it's gone, replaced by a new collaboration between tattoo artist and muralist Jesse Smith and Miami-based...

Can Firehouse Put Richmond on the National Theatre Map?

In the electric and perpetually sincere terrain of Richmond’s theatre culture, there are institutions that do more than merely reside, they lead. They serve as a measure of our city's potential beyond its natural aspirations. I've witnessed Firehouse Theatre inhabit...

Photos | Warriors in Bloom at Agecroft Hall

For one weekend, Agecroft Hall stopped being a museum and became a kingdom.  What began as a fundraiser to help launch Richmond's first Renaissance Faire has grown into a destination of its own. Warriors in Bloom, created by the folks at Virago Alley, returned with...
