A Rebirth Most Noble: ‘Warriors in Bloom’ Heralds a New Age in Richmond

This isn’t your typical Renaissance faire. On Saturday, August 2nd, Warriors in Bloom takes over Agecroft Halll, not to rehash the old, but to reimagine it entirely.

Organized by the nonprofit Virago Alley, this one-day festival puts the spotlight on the original disruptors the women and gender-diverse warriors from history who didn’t wait to be written into the story. They took the pen and sword for themselves.

The event is part cultural gathering, part creative rebellion. It’s a celebration of historical “viragos”: figures like Joan of Arc, Rani Durgavati, Grace O’Malley, whose names rarely make it into textbooks but whose legacies echo through every act of resistance today. That feels right. This isn’t about nostalgia but about reclamation.

More than 60 local artisans and makers will be set up across the grounds, alongside a day’s worth of live music and performance: from the all-femme folk fury of Ferox to storytelling, puppetry, mock witch trials, strength games, and role-play theater. There’s axe throwing by Shield & Sheath, calligraphy demos, herbalist lessons, and a scavenger hunt led by the Faerie Federation. You’ll find live weaving, face painting, a full scriptorium, and a misting tent. (Yes, someone planned ahead for the August heat.)

Warriors in Bloom is also a launchpad. It’s a fundraiser for Richmond’s first full Renaissance Faire, set to debut in spring 2026, so showing up supports something longer-lasting than a Saturday escape. The ticket prices are refreshingly accessible: $15 for adults, $12 for youth. Kids under 6 get in free.

At its core, this is about building a space that feels less like performance and more like presence. A space where Richmond’s artists, writers, fighters, and dreamers can imagine a past that serves the future. One where rebellion isn’t an afterthought, it’s the reason we gather.

So if you’ve been waiting for a Renaissance that reflects now, here it is.
