Richmond has many cool hidden gems around the city to eat, shop, stay and play.

Richmond has many cool hidden gems around the city to eat, shop, stay and play. Quirk Hotel may be one of the newer destinations on the block, but it was recently named one of the best hotels by Conde Nast Traveler in its Hot List 2016 of the Best New Hotels in the World.

The publication picked 60 hotels and resorts from around the world that “combined old school extravagance and service with just the right measure of modernity and Quirk Hotel came in at number 12.

The 75-room boutique hotel which doubles as an art gallery, opened in September 2015 on West Broad Street with Katie and Ted Ukrop at the helm. Here’s what Conde Nast had to say:

“A painstaking, no-holds-barred restoration has created a hotel that’s as much a magnet for locals as it is for visitors. Even the old pine floors (removed for earthquake retrofitting) were recycled into custom-designed furniture. There’s a rooftop terrace, a coffee bar showcasing locally roasted beans, and a restaurant, Maple & Pine, helmed by Chef David Dunlap, who has an impressive resume with stints at Alain Ducasse’s Adour, The Jefferson Hotel in D.C., and The Inn at Little Washington.”

Quirk Hotel’s rooftop bar opened April 23 so make sure you go check it out while you have a cocktail and look out over the city.

The best Fourth of July celebration in Richmond probably isn't the one with the biggest fireworks. It's the one where someone forgot the hot dog buns, the cooler is running low on ice, kids are chasing each other through sprinklers, and somebody insists they know a...
