Comedy fans won’t want to miss this one! Standup comedian Tig Notaro will be performing next week at Charlottesville’s Jefferson Theater next week, and RVA Mag has a pair of tickets to give away! Notaro has seen her career take off over the past couple of years. She’s recently finished filming for Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro, a comedy special in which she performs at the homes of fans. The special is expected to air on Showtime in early 2015, and will be followed by a memoir Notaro also plans to release in 2015. She’s recently appeared on Maron and Garfunkel And Oates, as well as in the film Walk Of Shame, and also hosts a weekly podcast, Professor Blastoff, produced by the Earwolf Podcast Network.

However, all of this success began in a surprising manner–with Notaro being diagnosed with cancer in 2012. She handled the situation in a brave and unusual manner, by announcing her cancer diagnosis onstage during a standup performance at Largo in LA. The performance was recorded and later released by Louis CK for download on his website under the name Live. CK called the performance a “truly great, masterful standup set,” and a lot of other people agreed. Dispensing with her usual material, Notaro talked openly and amusingly about a series of personal disasters that had recently befallen her–and managed to make it totally hilarious. And of course, that album is not available for streaming on the internet, but you can get a glimpse of her awkward yet endearing comedy stylings in the following story about forgotten 80s pop singer Taylor Dayne, which she told on Conan O’Brien’s After Hours Standup series in 2012:

If you enjoyed that, you will definitely enjoy Tig Notaro’s full set at The Jefferson on Monday October 6, part of her Boyish Girl Interrupted tour and the Jefferson’s ongoing Laugh Your Ass Off Comedy Showcase. Don’t miss it!
