Ashland’s Center of the Universe Brewing Company spent last the few months hard at work to expand their new taproom and they haven’t slowed down yet, in fact, they have a few more tricks brewing.

The craft brewers will expand with a second production facility and taproom, Origin Beer Lab, in historic Ashland at 106 South Railroad Avenue, formerly Chiffarobe Fine Antiques and Gifts.

Origin Beer Lab will be churning out specialty small production brews including sour beers with the capacity to produce approximately 30 barrels of beer per month.

“One of the reasons we love making beer is experimenting with new flavors and techniques,” said co-founder Chris Ray in a release. “Origin will allow our brewers to explore some innovative and creative brewing without impacting the capacity of our current operation. Our inner nerds are very excited about this project.”

With their 50-seat “1950s mad scientist” taproom, which will include indoor and outdoor seating, merchandise, and to go beer packs, and their new beers, COTU hopes to increase the economic activity of historic Ashland and make this facility a main tourist attraction for the area.

“As an Ashland resident, I have been extremely impressed with The Main Street Association’s progress in revamping downtown Ashland,” said co-founder Chris Ray in the release. “Our goal outside of the practical applications for the brewery, is to assist and build upon Main Street’s progress and bring to light the wonderful area that I call home.”

The brewery originally opened its door in November 2012 at 11293 Airpark Rd., and the last few months they have been expanding like crazy. In July, COTU opened their remodeled taproom, added a rotary canning line, and in June the brewery expanded into the Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia market. Their Pocahoptas IPA, Ray Ray’s Extra Pale Ale, Universal Lager, and Monkey’s Uncle brews are now sold from here to DC.

COTU has tapped RVA marketing consultant and former restaurateur, Sarah Choi, as the general manager to oversee taproom operation, private event sales and marketing. Origin Beer Lab is slated for completion in mid-fall.
