Tapped: Stone’s Throw Down in RVA, Beer & Wine Classic, & Fine Creek’s Turf & Twig Brown Ale

What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s “Tapped,” RVA Magazine’s go to weekly craft beer column where you can find all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals and all the booze news your little hearts’ desire.

If you missed last week’s beer news, you can check those out here. We are nearing the end of Virginia Craft Beer Month, but our cup is still overflowing with news this week from releases to events, and other cool happenings around town, so hold on to your mugs because we’re getting ready to tap this thing!

So, the biggest news is Stone Brewing’s first beer and music festival, Stone’s Throw Down in RVA, this Saturday on Brown’s Island. It’s their one year anniversary of their Richmond brewery and they’re giving back to the city and the people that love it in a major way. First, check out this sweet lineup: PontiakThe Bright Light Social HourJEFF The BrotherhoodNO BS! Brass BandThe London Souls, and Lettuce. Doors open at 12:00pm and craft beer from Stone Brewing & friends will be available for purchase. Rain or shine!
Also, join them for the Pre Party and Post Party at The Broadberry! Tickets are $10.

The annual Beer & Wine Classic, hosted by the Dooley Noted Society, kicks off at Maymont this Friday night from 7-10:30 pm.  Guests can sample some of Virginia’s finest beverages from 14 local breweries and wineries, all while enjoying delicious food, live music from The Whiskey Rebellion, a lawn game zone offered by CLUBWAKA, and a prop-filled photo booth provided by Chris Vickers Photography, LLC. Breweries and wineries on tap for this year’s event include Ardent Craft Ales,Ballast Point Brewing CompanyBarboursville VineyardsBold Rock Cidery,Buskey CiderChampion RVAElk Island WineryHardywood Park Craft BreweryKindred Spirit BrewingMidnight BreweryNarmada Winery,Smartmouth BeerSteam Bell Beer Works, and Stone Brewing Richmond!

Steam Bell Beer Works will bring back their Harwood’s Entire Porter with Mexican Spices this Saturday.  This beer is a 6.5% American porter with chocolate, habaneros and cinnamon.

Brews & Burlesque is going down at Strangeways Brewing this Friday from 9-11pm and all your favorite local stars will be there. Tickets are $10 in advance, $13 at the door.

Midnight Brewery will release its Mitternacht – Oktoberfest Lager this Saturday, a Bavarian-style Amber lager. Prost!

Hardywood will release its RVA IPA in cans this weekend. This community hopped IPA” is brewed with 100% freshly harvested Virginia-grown hops and 100% Virginia-grown malt from Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, VA.

Center of the Universe’s Fall Cornhole League starts tomorrow, Sept. 7.  Fall season runs for 6 weeks. All you need is a teammate and a willingness to throw bags at a hole on a board.Sign up is FREE for teams of 2 and you will be playing for the coveted engraved winners’ mug. Times are 6:30 and 7:30 pm,

Intermission Brewing Company just opened last weekend in Henrico near VCC. If you missed their grand opened last weekend, be sure to head out to Brook Road this weekend and give them a try. And read up on their brews and backstory in our interview here.


This weekend, Fine Creek Craft Brewing Co. in Powhatan will have Tractor Juice Belgian DIPA back on draught. Saturday the brewery will have a Cask release of their Turf & Twig Brown ale and on Sunday Kris Scott will be playing live music. They will also be serving up BBQ chicken grilled pizzas.

Fine Creek is also hosting a benefit for the Powhatan chapter of the Rotary club this Thursday.
Tonight is $1 Oyster Night at The Veil Brewing Co. Northern Neck Oysters will be bringing bushels of oysters and will be shucking them until they run out. Open 4-9p.

On Thursday, The Veil will be giving 10% of draft sales from 4p-9p to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey victims. From 5p-7p, Bobby Kelland of AFLAC, David Saunders and Meredith Mason ofMadison+Main will be in the tasting room collecting donations for Hurricane Harvey. RVA Brasa will be bringing the freshest seafood, meats and veggies over wood, fire and grill.

To commemorate their 50th brew, Three Notch’d Brewing RVA Collab House returns this Thursday with “Core Crew” a saison made with their staff. Collab taps at 5pm, Brewer’s Toast after 6pm and pint specials on the 1st keg until it kicks or until 9pm.

On Saturday, Castleburg Brewery will release their LAdy of the Lake Blonde Ale.
