Tapped: Garden Grove’s Death, Triple Crossing’s Poor Icarus, & Vasen’s One-Year Anniversary

What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s “Tapped,” RVA Magazine’s go to weekly craft beer column where you can find all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals and all the booze news your little hearts’ desire.

If you missed last week’s beer news, you can check those out here. Our cup is overflowing with news this week from releases to events, and other cool happenings around town, so hold on to your mugs because we’re getting ready to tap this thing!

So, the big throwdown this weekend is Vasen Brewing’s One Year Anniversary party. Can’t believe this Scott’s Addition brewery has already been here for a year. This Saturday, the brewery will take over the lot across the street and celebrate their success with an all-day fest of bands, tons of food, games, outdoor activities, and of course, brews. Bio Ritmo, Black Alley, Bush League, Chance Fischer, Illiterate Light, and Toxic Moxie will be performing at this shindig and the libations lineup is stacked as well with taps from Ardent Craft Ales, Aslin Beer Company, Black Heath Meadery, Blue Bee Cider, Buskey Cider, Courthouse Creek Cider, Final Gravity Brewing Co., Isley Brewing Company, Ninja Kombucha, O’Connor Brewing Co., Right Proper Brewing Company, Reservoir Distillery, Rocket Frog and more! Food trucks Goatocado, Indo-Tibetan Food Truck, King of Pops, and more will be there serving up delicious food and if that’s not enough, the brewery is offering free archery lessons, mini golf, and fly casting and slacklining lessons. Garden Grove Brewery & Urban Winery will finally bring back its award-winning Belgian Quadrupel, Death this Friday. Fermented with 2016 Virginia Petit Verdot grapes grown in Garden Grove’s own vineyard and then transferred into French Oak Syrah Wine Barrels from Napa Valley just and aged for 17 months, this 10% brew will surely have you dancing with the reaper after just a few.

Triple Crossing has a stacked lineup of releases for its Fulton location this weekend. First up is their 6% IPA Mosaic Triangles punching you right in the mouth with its bright citrusy notes of clementines and tangerines. Next is their Nectar and Knife, an 8% DIPA. This beer is the core of their hop-forward offerings and their debut DIPA. Pineapple, passion fruit and mango come through here. $16.50 per 4 pack (1 case limit). Rounding out the releases is the 8% DIPA, Poor Icarus. This pineapple bomb is packed with notes of pineapple creamsicle juice and hopped this with Vic Secret, El Dorado, and Azacca. $17.50 per 4 pack (1 case limit). Mouth is watering already!

This Friday, Hardywood will release Bubby’s Blackberry Cobbler, a variation of their Virginia Blackberry White Ale with vanilla, toasted coconut, milk sugar and even more blackberries. The brew will be available in their Richmond, West Creek and Charlottesville taprooms on draft and in 4/16oz cans to go.

Time is Money IPA returns to Steam Bell Beer Works this Friday. You can grab a 4pk of 16 ounce cans to cruise you through the weekend!

Steam Bell’s sister brewery over in the Fan, Canon & Draw Brewing Company, will have its Welcher’s IPA can release for you this Friday. This single hop IPA is hopped with Nelson Sauvin hops. The signature aroma of grape juice is accompanied by the same nuanced sweetness in the taste. Will be available on draft as well.

This Friday, Goochland’s Midnight Brewery will release its Blood Moon Bliss, a blood orange IPA in cans. Blood oranges take center stage, while all the juicy hops you’ve come to enjoy, dance in the background.

Three Notch’d RVA Collab House returns this Thursday with their weekly collaboration. This week, its Fluffy Pillow, a New England IPA courtesy of RVA Head Brewer Willey Broaddus. Thanks to the Vic Secret and Citra hops, you have one juicy, citrusy pillow-like brew that is perfect for this summer or to take away these rainy day blues. Pint Specials from 4-7pm.

On Saturday, Petersburg’s Trapezium Brewery will release its Shatterproof DIPA. Brewed with Falconer’s Flight and Mosaic hops, this bad boy clocks in at 8%. Get some!

Strangeways Brewing has several new summer releases for you to try this Saturday. First up, There Is A Light That Never Gose Out, a 5.5% traditional Leipziger style Gose using locally grown Murphy and Rude malts, coriander & sea salt.

Next up is Playday Pilsner, an east-drinking 5% caramel pilsner. Finally, the brewery will have Everything Changes Double Dry-hopped Pale Ale, Strangeways’ next iteration in their Directional Pale Ale series Flavors of ripe mango, orange marmalade, and pineapple juice are coming through on this juicy brew!

Ardent Craft Ales will release its MXICAN Lager this Friday, a crisp, clean beer brewed with rice and corn for a dry, refreshing finish. Clocking in at 4.4% ABV, this is the first of two collabs the brewery did with Dssolvr.

Goochland cidery Courthouse Creek Cider, which recently opened a tasting room in Scott’s Addition, will release its Heretic cider next Sat., Aug 4 at their Goochland location. A blend of 90% Harrison apple and 10% Esopus Spitzenburg apples, this cider is perfect for creamy cheeses or a savory dessert! This was a small batch so make sure you go grab some before its gone!

Final Gravity Brewing Co. returns this Friday with Weizen Up, a hefeweizen with velvety notes of banana and clove. Light and easy drinking!

Watchtower Witbier comes to Castleburg Brewery & Taproom this Friday. this Belgian wheat beer is brewed with orange peel and Coriander.

Starting this Friday, July 27, Legend Brewing Co. is hosting Brewery Night! Every Friday 5-9pm Legend will be opening the brewery doors to craft brew fanatics! 21 and up, Free to attend! Serving special brewers choice beer not available anywhere else. But don’t fret; we’ll have the classics too. Grab a pint downstairs, chat with the brewers, and taste what Legend has been cooking up!
